PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Dimebag Abbot (ranked 3405 p4p, 2469 weight class) and Zacharias Sabel (ranked 387 p4p, 284 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 4 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Dimebag Abbot! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 7 - 8 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, Zacharias Sabel! The judges for this bout are Anthony Taglia, Jonathan Paton and Chad Campbell.
 The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sabel misses with a lunging right hand
and Abbot counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. Sabel throws a lazy right hand but Abbot sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. A swing and a miss from Sabel. Abbot seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance. Sabel bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Abbot's head backwards. Sabel misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Abbot is looking to counter with a body kick. Abbot slips a jab from Sabel. As Sabel tries to get set, Abbot tries to push him back and clinch up but Sabel manages to avoid the attempt. Sabel dips to his left and cracks Abbot with an uppercut! A big left from Sabel misses. Abbot wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch. Sabel misses with an uppercut. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Sabel throws an ugly left hook that misses
letting Abbot counter with a right hand. Sabel works Abbot's body with a nice hook. Zacharias Sabel seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. A jab from Sabel finds it's way through Abbot's defenses. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Sabel misses with a looping right. Abbot half committed to a counter leg kick.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Sabel scores with a punch to the head. Abbot steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Sabel. Sabel lands a body shot.
Sabel lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Abbot backs up against the cage.
Sabel wants to slow Abbot down by chopping away at his legs. Sabel fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Abbot manages to avoid it. Abbot is looking to counter with a body kick. Sabel misses with a telegraphed body shot
and Abbot makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range. Sabel throws a sloppy body shot
and Abbot counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Abbot ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Abbot no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Abbot has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Sabel can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Sabel got a little sloppy there for a moment and Abbot has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Sabel has managed to get both his arms back between Abbot's legs - danger averted.

Sabel really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Abbot. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Sabel wants to stand but Abbot is controlling his posture from full guard.
Abbot has his foot on Sabel's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Sabel works his way back into a safe position though. Sabel controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Sabel avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Sabel looking to sit in guard and control but Abbot gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Sabel is trying to control the position but Abbot postures up. Abbot seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Abbot pushing down on Sabel's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.

Sabel looking for submissions off his back. Abbot looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. Sabel keeping hold of Abbot's head, controlling as best he can. Abbot slows the pace down in half guard. Sabel is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. That was a close round but I would say that Dimebag Abbot will probably get the nod. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Sabel swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target. Abbot looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight. Sabel stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Abbot. Sabel cracks Abbot with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd. Sabel misses with a jab, cross combination.
Zacharias Sabel seems to be getting the better of the standup. Abbot slips under a jab. Abbot throws a quick counter kick to the body but Sabel avoids it. Abbot takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming. Sabel scores with a shot to the body.

Sabel throws an overhand right that lands on Abbot's shoulder, as Abbot tries to avoid the shot. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Sabel misses with an uppercut
and Abbot makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range. Sabel dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Abbot has not gone for a single takedown so far in this fight, which seems like a very strange tactic when you consider that he has the superior wrestling and BJJ. Sabel lands a right hook to the body.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Sabel misses with a right hand enabling Abbot to counter with a crisp jab.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Donk. Sabel catches Abbot right on the button with a cross. Abbot steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Sabel. Sabel just misses with a punch to the body.

Abbot lands on the inside with an uppercut. Sabel displaying some good clinch control by pressing Abbot up against the cage. Sabel lands with a short shot to the head. Sabel misses with some punches.
Sabel blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
Abbot manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back. Abbot keeping full guard, as Sabel tries to pass.

Sabel has gone for a leg lock! Abbot slips out almost immediately though and dives into Sabel's guard.

Abbot is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Sabel has escaped the position, nice work there. You can see the frustration on Sabel's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. A lull in the action here as Abbot stalls from top position. Sabel is looking for a sweep.

I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet. Sabel is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Abbot is one step ahead and moves to full mount! Abbot controlling from the full mount. Abbot moves to back control.
Abbot is working for the choke. He's slipped one arm under the chin. Sabel has to defend the other arm for all he's worth... but Abbot has managed to get that arm free too and he's tightening the choke! Sabel taps out and looks absolutely disgusted with himself. Abbot doesn't care though - he's delighted!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:58 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Dimebag Abbot!
