PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Justin Schaeffer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Urijah Faber (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Justin Schaeffer!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Urijah Faber!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Trevor Gratis and William Peck.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Faber throws a head kick that misses.
Faber shoots in looking for a takedown. Schaeffer tries to sprawl out of it but Faber keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Schaeffer manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Faber closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Schaeffer to the mat! Schaeffer manages to get full guard.

Faber drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Faber jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Schaeffer looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Schaeffer avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Faber works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Faber trying to control the action but Schaeffer is working from the bottom.
Schaeffer is looking for a sweep. Faber is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Schaeffer tries to clinch up.

and Faber decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Schaeffer's guard.
Faber trying to control the position from guard on top but Schaeffer is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Faber thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.

Faber slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Faber has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Schaeffer is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Faber postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.

Faber in side control, just content to control the action for now.
Faber is looking to take a break and control but Schaeffer is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Faber tries for a kimura but Schaeffer is defending well.

Faber wants to control but Schaeffer is keeping him busy.
Schaeffer can't do much from the bottom here.
Schaeffer knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Faber on the ground.
Schaeffer tries to bench press Faber off him but Faber keeps the position.
Faber works to advance to full mount. Schaeffer defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs.
Schaeffer really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Schaeffer is looking to improve his position but Faber isn't that keen on the idea.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Faber with shots to the head and body - Schaeffer looks very uncomfortable down there.
Faber landing strikes, looking to finish!
Schaeffer tries to buck Faber off but he can't manage it.
Schaeffer working to try and regain half guard.
Faber scoring with strikes but Schaeffer is staying in there.
Faber lands a big elbow.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.



Faber drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Faber is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Schaeffer is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Schaeffer is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Faber is controlling him well.
Schaeffer is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Schaeffer is trying to get back to full guard.
Faber not doing much here.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Schaeffer on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Schaeffer tries to get out of the position.

Faber slows the pace down in half guard.
Schaeffer tries to kick Faber off but Faber keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Faber wants to lay and pray for a moment but Schaeffer keeps working.
Faber seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Faber is pressing down on Schaeffer's thigh, looking to free his foot. Schaeffer is holding on for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Faber is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Schaeffer is just riding it out for now. Faber eventually gives up the hold.
Faber is keen to just control but Schaeffer is a slippery customer.

Faber is working for a kimura but Schaeffer is defending it quite comfortably.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Faber wants to control the pace but Schaeffer is squirming around nicely.

Faber working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Schaeffer is working hard here to advance position.
Schaeffer is bucking up trying to escape but Faber cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
Faber tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Schaeffer is desperately trying to improve his position but Faber has a good base and remains in mount.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Faber is working for a guillotine from mount but Schaeffer frees his head quite easily.
Faber trying to control but Schaeffer is having none of it.
And that�s the end of the round � the fighters go back to their corners.

Urijah Faber showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Schaeffer tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Schaeffer looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Faber is fending him off so far but Schaeffer persists. Nope, Faber circles away and we're back to standing.

Justin Schaeffer is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Faber misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Justin Schaeffer has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Urijah Faber.
Schaeffer closes this distance looking for a takedown but Faber circles away.

and Faber counters with a nice double leg into side control. Schaeffer won't be happy with that.

Schaeffer is looking to get back to his feet here but Faber is keeping cool and he's managed to take Schaeffer's back.

Faber working for the rear naked choke here. He's got one arm under but Schaeffer is defending well. A couple of punches soften him up though and Faber has tightened the hold! This one could be all over! It is! Schaeffer taps out!
