Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 3 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, William Ward! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 16 - 6 - 1, fighting out of London, Christ Benoit! The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Robert Douchet and Trevor Gratis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ward moves out of range as Benoit strikes. Benoit leaves Ward with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Ward takes one to the chin there.
It looks like William Ward has been cut. Ward moves out of range as Benoit strikes. Benoit connects with the punch. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Benoit wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection. Ward takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Christ Benoit seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Benoit throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
That's one minute gone in the round. Benoit connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son. Ward shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Ward thows a huge punch but Benoit dodges it nicely.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Ward missing with the ground and pound from half guard. The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Ward lands a nice short elbow. Ward has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Ward thows a huge punch but Benoit dodges it nicely.
We've been hearing that Ward has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish. Benoit is trying to stand up here but Ward is controlling him well. Benoit is refusing to be controlled, as Ward sits in half guard. Ward missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Benoit blocking the ground and pound attempt from Ward. Benoit wants to get back to his feet. Ward is keen to just control but Benoit is a slippery customer. Benoit is trying to stand.
Ward seems to be looking for submissions.
Ward is trying to control. Benoit wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. Christ Benoit is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Ward walks into a left hand. This fight brought to you by 5M nutrition - it's mmmmm tasty. Nice jab by Benoit. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Ward shoots in looking for a takedown. Benoit tries to sprawl out of it but Ward keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Benoit manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Benoit cracks Ward with a right hand to the side of the head. Benoit with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Benoit connects with a looping right hand.
William Ward's cut is getting worse. Benoit scores with a body shot.
Benoit doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Ward displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Benoit throws out the jab. Benoit cracks a nice hook into Ward's ribs. Benoit throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Ward feinted with a counter takedown. Benoit uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Ward has time to react. Benoit closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Benoit is stalling here.
A short right from Benoit on the inside. Ward is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Benoit gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for William Ward. That's going to take a lot out of him. A short body shot lands from Ward as the two fighters clinch.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily. Benoit slowing the pace effectively. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Christ Benoit dominated that round. The cut man is working on William Ward's cut. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Ward throws a body kick, spinning off balance and Benoit counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. Ward darts in looking for a takedown but Benoit gets double underhooks and turns Ward into the cage. Benoit scores with a nice hook to the head. Benoit lands a hook to the side of the head.
Ward is rocked! Benoit lands a right hand that snaps the head of Ward backwards. Oh Ward is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!! Benoit stalling in the clinch.
Ward throws a punch but it's blocked by Benoit. Benoit lands with a short head shot on the inside. Ward tries for a takedown. No joy.
Benoit is pushing Ward up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word. Ward seems to have got his legs back now. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Benoit lands an uppercut.
William Ward's cut is bleeding quite badly. He's got to try and protect it. An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Ward. Benoit works on Ward's body with a couple of short punches.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ward can't find room to land a body shot as Benoit controls the action.
Ward manages to break the clinch.
Ward fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Benoit manages to avoid it. Benoit lands a big head kick that sends Ward tumbling to the mat! Benoit takes a step backwards and waves Ward back to his feet - he wants the finish! Some wild striking there from Benoit.
Ward walks straight into a right hand from Benoit - that's dropped him! Benoit jumps into mount and starts pounding away - can he finish?! More strikes go undefended and the referee has to dive in to save Ward from any more punishment! Ward complains about the stoppage but falls over as he tries to stand back up, so it was clearly a good stoppage.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:40 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punches). Christ Benoit! Our winner, Christ Benoit, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans.
