Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, James Benoit! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Tawanda Zulu! The judges for this bout are Percy O'Donnell, Don Winkell and Timothy Bukovac.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Benoit avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Benoit takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Benoit uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Zulu. Benoit throws a body shot but no joy. Benoit looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight. Benoit lands with a good body shot. Zulu throws a hook to the side of Benoit's head but Benoit sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully. An attempted straight right counter from Benoit misses the target. Zulu fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. A jab from Zulu misses. Benoit takes a body punch but keeps moving. Benoit shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Zulu's guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Benoit connects with a couple of short punches. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Benoit trying to control but Zulu is working from the bottom. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Benoit controls from within his opponent's guard. Benoit postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Benoit advances position into side control! Benoit working the head with strikes. Benoit working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Benoit has hold of Zulu's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Zulu seems comfortable defending it but Benoit has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Zulu is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Zulu is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Benoit couldn't care less - he's delighted!
