PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Tetsuo Shima (ranked 950 p4p, 1268 weight class) and Dax Ryan (ranked 131 p4p, 175 weight class). Shima comes to the cage accompanied by The HU - Yuve Yuve Yu. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 43 - 20 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Tetsuo Shima!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Dax Ryan!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Ian Loll and Yves DeLean.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Ryan keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Ryan looked like he wanted to counter with a punch but didn't throw it.
Shima throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Ryan sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Ryan throws out a counter right but Shima avoids it with no problem.
Shima lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.

Ryan looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Shima might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Ryan postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Shima not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Shima knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Ryan on the ground.
Ryan throwing strikes but missing.
Ryan has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Ryan throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Shima works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Ryan scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Ryan lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Ryan postures up in Shima's guard and throws a big left but Shima blocks it.

Ryan throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Shima is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Ryan dives into side control.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Ryan working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.

Ryan cracks Shima with a big right hand but Shima just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Shima tries to buck Ryan off but Ryan is having none of it.
Ryan throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Ryan lands a few punches from side control.

Shima is rocked!
Ryan tries to score with some ground and pound. Shima controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Oh Shima is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Ryan in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Shima wants to control but Ryan postures up.
Shima seems to have got his legs back now.
Ryan in side control lands a decent elbow.
Shima takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Ryan creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Shima sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Sloppy strikes there by Ryan.
Shima is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Ryan tries to land with some ground and pound but misses.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Shima manages to work his way to half guard, despite Ryan's best efforts.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Ryan lands a nice short elbow.
Ryan not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Ryan missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Ryan is pressing down on Shima's thigh, looking to free his foot. Shima is holding on for now.
Shima tries to get to full guard but Ryan has control of the leg.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Ryan working over Shima with some ground and pound. Shima looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Ryan sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Shima defending well though.
Ryan thows a huge punch but Shima dodges it nicely.

Ryan throwing shots but Shima is blocking nicely.
Ryan lands a big elbow from half guard. That looks like it's hurt Shima quite badly. Shima pulls Ryan in close trying to recover. Ryan postures up and lands two really hard shots that put Shima on queer street! The ref takes a look and decides to call an end to the fight! Possibly an early stoppage but Shima doesn't seem to be complaining too much.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:52 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Dax Ryan!
Dax Ryan is the new welterweight champion!
A relieved looking Dax Ryan thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
Tetsuo Shima was interviewed post fight and said 'Off to the next, I thought I would have beat this bum but shit happens'.
