PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between James Kirk (ranked 1934 p4p, 2247 weight class) and Alfonz Novak (ranked 215 p4p, 253 weight class). Kirk's entrance music is my fighting ability is alot like my acting. A fine choice. Novak has chosen A Tout Le Monde - Megadeth as his entrance music. Alfonz Novak told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 24 - 18 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, James Kirk! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 9 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Alfonz Novak! The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Cecil Peabody and Daniel Franklin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Novak changes levels and scores with a jab to the body. Kirk has been working on his boxing with his coaches at The House Of Pain in the buildup to the fight. Kirk throws a body kick despite being completely out of range and Novak counters with a nice double leg into guard. Novak not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Novak postures up.
Novak postures up in Kirk's guard and throws a big left but Kirk blocks it. Kirk is looking to stand up but Novak isn't so interested in that idea. Kirk tries to land a sweep but no joy. Novak throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Novak with a flurry of punches that miss. Kirk on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Kirk tries to get out of the position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Novak engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Novak trying to control but Kirk is working from the bottom. Novak tries to free his leg and advance position but Kirk is retaining full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Novak stands up over Kirk, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Novak accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Novak is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact. Novak with a flurry of punches that miss. Novak loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Kirk is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Novak is looking to work some ground and pound but Kirk has wrist control. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Novak accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Novak in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Novak trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Novak advances to half guard. Novak lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Novak lands strikes from half guard. Novak is trying to control the action in half guard but Kirk is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Kirk wants to get back to his feet.
Novak content to control rather than advance. Novak scoring with strikes to the body and head. Novak has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Novak missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Kirk trying to control from the bottom.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Novak throwing shots but Kirk is blocking nicely. Novak throwing shots but Kirk is blocking nicely.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Kirk trying to control but Novak postures up.
Novak lands with a punch from half guard. Novak throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Novak drops an elbow to the side of Kirk's head. Novak lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Kirk is rocked! Kirk wants to improve his position but Novak is controlling well.
Novak slips a nice elbow through Kirk's hands, connecting with Kirk's forehead. Novak wants to lay and pray for a moment but Kirk keeps working. Novak is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Novak takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Novak lands a nice short elbow. Kirk knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Novak on the ground. Novak is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound. Oh Kirk is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! Novak missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Kirk seems to have got his legs back now. Novak is nestled in close to Kirk, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Kirk is trying to stand up here but Novak is controlling him well. Novak lands with a punch from half guard. Kirk is staying active underneath Novak, who seems content to just control the action from this position. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Kirk has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Novak is working away from the top position though. Novak looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Kirk with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Alfonz Novak dominated that round. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Novak drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Novak preventing the sweep. Novak scores with a decent looking elbow strike. Novak cracks Kirk with a solid left hand. Novak with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Novak passes Kirk's left leg - he's now in half guard. Novak missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Novak trying to control the action but Kirk is working from the bottom. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Novak sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Kirk defending well though. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Kirk is staying active underneath Novak, who seems content to just control the action from this position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Novak takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists. Novak not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
That's one minute gone in the round. Novak working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that. Novak looks to score some points with some ground and pound. The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Novak lands a nice short elbow. Novak lands a massive shot from half guard that has rocked Kirk! More strikes land and this one is all over! Novak jumps to his feet and is applauded loudly by the crowd!
