Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Thiago Sylva (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jose Jesus Arvelado (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Sylva comes to the cage accompanied by Metallica - Seek & Destroy. Sylva has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. Jose Jesus Arvelado told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Thiago Sylva! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Jose Jesus Arvelado! The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Hugh Johnson and Winston Howard.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Nice sprawl there from Arvelado as Sylva shoots in. Sylva is breathing heavily. Arvelado with a lazy takedown attempt so Sylva counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. Arvelado bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Sylva's guard. Arvelado working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Arvelado looking to pass the guard. Arvelado throwing strikes from guard but Sylva blocks nicely. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Arvelado postures up in Sylva's guard and throws a big left but Sylva blocks it. Arvelado with a flurry of punches that miss. Arvelado wants to stand but Sylva is controlling his posture from full guard. Arvelado postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Arvelado will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Jose Jesus Arvelado seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Arvelado swings wildly with a couple of big hooks

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up. Arvelado doesn't succeed with the takedown and Sylva counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Arvelado looks like he's trying to stand up.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Sylva drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Sylva jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Hammerfist, elbow! yells Sylva's corner. There ya go! There ya go! Thiago Sylva overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Sylva wants to control from the top but Arvelado keeps moving. Arvelado is looking for a sweep. Sylva is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Sylva looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Arvelado with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Arvelado wants to get back to his feet. Sylva working the head and body with strikes. Sylva stalling. Arvelado is not content to let Sylva control the position. Arvelado flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.

Thiago Sylva is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Arvelado wants to get back to his feet but Sylva is in a dominant position and won't allow it. That's four minutes gone in the round. Sylva is looking for a kimura but Arvelado is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Sylva to get the leverage. Sylva takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Thiago Sylva has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jose Jesus Arvelado. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Arvelado manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Sylva tries to lock up and control but Arvelado gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Sylva wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Arvelado.
Sylva regains half guard. Jose Jesus Arvelado has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Sylva keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.
And that's the end of the fight! Thiago Sylva showed his dominance in that final round. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Sylva, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
