This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the light heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of London, with a TWGC record of 54 wins and 55 losses; Esteban Mondragon! And in the blue corner, fighting out of London, with a TWGC record of 33 wins and 22 losses; Shane Goble! The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Stewart Dunkirk and Chris Downing.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way.
Mondragon feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Mondragon (2) vs (0) Goble The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Goble pulls Mondragon in close to his closed guard and prevents Mondragon from doing any damage or advancing position. Mondragon's corner is telling him to maintain position. Mondragon wants to pass the guard but Goble is keeping the position. Mondragon sitting in guard, not really doing much. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Mondragon pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Goble is keeping the position for now.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Goble controlling Mondragon's posture. Mondragon has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Mondragon wants to control from the top but Goble keeps moving. Mondragon sitting in guard, not really doing much. Goble has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

 That's three minutes gone in the round. Mondragon trying to control but Goble is working from the bottom. Mondragon stopping the sweep attempt from Goble. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Goble has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Mondragon has passed into side control.

 That's four minutes gone in the round. Mondragon is staying tight to Goble's torso, preventing him from escaping. Goble is trying to control Mondragon's posture but Mondragon avoids it. Goble tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Mondragon wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
 That's five minutes gone in the round. Goble felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it. Mondragon taking a breather here. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Who's going to make the next move? Goble is looking to regain half guard here but Mondragon keeps moving and retains side control.
 That's six minutes gone in the round. Mondragon trying to control the position but Goble is working away. Mondragon is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Goble is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Goble is looking for a sweep. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Mondragon controlling from side mount. Mondragon trying to control the action but Goble is working from the bottom.
 That's seven minutes gone in the round. Mondragon just content to control the position. Mondragon wants to control but Goble is keeping him busy. Goble is trying to control Mondragon's posture but Mondragon avoids it.

Mondragon goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Goble rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Mondragon's guard! Nice work there by Goble! Mondragon pulls Goble in close to his closed guard and prevents Goble from doing any damage or advancing position.
 That's nine minutes gone in the round. Mondragon controls Goble momentarily but Goble frees himself. Mondragon has Goble pulled in close to control his posture. Goble trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Goble trying to control the position from guard on top but Mondragon is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
 That's ten minutes gone in the round. Mondragon is trying to control the position but Goble postures up. Goble controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Mondragon has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage. It looks like Goble might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it. Mondragon is trying to control the position but Goble postures up. Goble is fighting to break Mondragon's control of his arms but Mondragon is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
 That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Mondragon controls Goble momentarily but Goble frees himself.
Goble got a little sloppy there for a moment and Mondragon has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Goble has managed to get both his arms back between Mondragon's legs - danger averted. Goble seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
 That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Goble tries to free his leg and advance position but Mondragon is retaining full guard. Mondragon wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Goble is now in half guard. Goble stalling. Goble is pressing down on Mondragon's thigh, looking to free his foot. Mondragon is holding on for now.
 That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Mondragon has his hands clasped together around Goble's back. He's all about the action. Mondragon is looking for a sweep. Goble is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Goble trying to mount his opponent but Mondragon defends it. Goble stalling.

Mondragon gets full guard. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Mondragon wants to control the position but Goble says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard. Mondragon is looking to improve his position.
And that's the end of the fight! Mondragon takes the fight on points by 5 to 2. Our winner, Esteban Mondragon, made sure he spent some time buttering up the crowd during his post fight interview, which will no doubt bring him a few more fans. |
