PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Ben Asskren (ranked 24902 p4p, 5021 weight class) and Khamzat Chimaev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ben Asskren has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Ben Asskren!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Khamzat Chimaev!
The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, Bruno Lombardi and Franklyn Lucas.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Chimaev tries to land a front kick but Asskren steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Asskren misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Chimaev.
Chimaev shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Asskren as he jumps to the side.
Chimaev misses with a head kick.
Asskren stuffs the takedown attempt from Chimaev. Chimaev gets slowly back to his feet.
Asskren goes for a double leg but Chimaev avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Chimaev continues to drive forward.
A frustrated look appears on Asskren's face as he tries to break the clinch.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows.
Asskren managing to block the knees to the body from Chimaev.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Chimaev breaks the clinch.
Chimaev misses with a head kick.

Asskren shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Asskren wants to work for an arm triangle but Chimaev is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Chimaev is refusing to be controlled, as Asskren sits in half guard.
Chimaev wants to control but Asskren is keeping busy.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Chimaev is trying to get back to full guard.
Chimaev regains full guard. Nicely done.

Asskren trying to control but Chimaev is working from the bottom.
Asskren looking to sit in guard and control but Chimaev gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Chimaev is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Chimaev's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Asskren utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Asskren is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Chimaev is aware though and is defending well.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Chimaev instigates a clinch.

Chimaev breaks the clinch.
Asskren changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Chimaev tries to avoid it but Asskren manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Chimaev to the ground. Chimaev escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Chimaev closes the distance and clinches.

Asskren manages to break the clinch.

Chimaev shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Asskren is breathing heavily.
Asskren won't allow Chimaev to pass to mount.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Khamzat Chimaev dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

A head kick misses from Asskren.

Chimaev darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Asskren is in trouble now - Chimaev has advanced to mount!
Asskren might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Chimaev wants to control the pace but Asskren is squirming around nicely.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Asskren keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Chimaev avoids the attempt from Asskren to control.

Asskren is in all sorts of trouble here.
Asskren has given up his back here.
Chimaev slows the pace down here. Having a little breather whilst he's in a dominant position, looking to rest and regain some energy, ready to go for the finish.

Chimaev is working for the choke. It looks like he might have got it... has he...? Yes! Asskren is tapping out! This one is all over!
