PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between John Cena (ranked 3827 p4p, 3870 weight class) and Igor Volkov (ranked 459 p4p, 0 weight class). Cena kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is 28 by Zach Bryan. The crowd seem to be enjoying Volkov's choice of entrance music: 0:40 / 3:26 Lezginka. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, John Cena!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Igor Volkov!
The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, Jonathan Paton and Chad Campbell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Volkov scores with a head kick.
Volkov fails to land with a series of punches.

Cena feints and as Volkov raises his hands in defense, Cena changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Volkov has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Cena can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Cena trying to stand up but can't free himself from Volkov's guard.
Cena is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Cena is looking to work some ground and pound but Volkov has wrist control.
Cena has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Volkov has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Cena tries to stand but Volkov is controlling from the bottom.

Cena pushes down on Volkov's leg and manages to get into half guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Cena is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Well, if Cena is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Volkov looks like he's trying to stand up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Volkov tries to roll over but Cena keeps him under control.
Cena slips a nice elbow through Volkov's hands, connecting with Volkov's forehead.
Volkov is trying to control but Cena manages to pass to mount!

Cena is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Volkov to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Volkov shrugs it off.

Cena wants to get back to his feet but Volkov is holding on tight.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Cena controlling the pace for now.

Cena looking to secure an arm triangle but Volkov defends it well.
Volkov is working to get back to half guard.
Cena has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Volkov's face.
Volkov is looking to get to half guard.

Cena goes for an armbar but Volkov turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Volkov.
Cena controls Volkov momentarily but Volkov frees himself.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Volkov stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Cena swivels though and keeps the full guard.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Cena looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

John Cena dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Volkov will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Cena throws a lazy right hand but Volkov sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Volkov shoots in for a takedown but Cena shows good takedown defense.
Cena blocks a head kick by Volkov.
It looked like Cena was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Volkov fails with an attempt to clinch.
Igor Volkov seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Volkov closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.

Cena gets back to full guard.

Volkov has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Cena to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Volkov is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Cena pulls down on the head and he's put Volkov to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:37 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). John Cena!
John Cena opened up his post fight interview with a scream to camera that he wants a title shot! Whether he deserves the shot will be up to the management of the organization, so I guess he'll have to wait and see.
