PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Akira Matsuda (ranked 3729 p4p, 3824 weight class) and Ramsey OBrien (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ramsey OBrien is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Akira Matsuda!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ramsey OBrien!
The judges for this bout are Yuuki Gou, Taro Takaoka and Sosuke Kotani.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Matsuda gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and OBrien counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by OBrien.
OBrien has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Matsuda is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

OBrien manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

OBrien looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
OBrien wants to stand but Matsuda is controlling the position.

Matsuda is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Matsuda wants to control from the top but OBrien keeps moving.

OBrien is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
OBrien throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

OBrien escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Matsuda forces OBrien back against the cage and clinches.
OBrien tries to pull guard but Matsuda won't allow it.
OBrien has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
OBrien has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Matsuda avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Akira Matsuda has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ramsey OBrien.
OBrien is trying to pull guard but Matsuda turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Matsuda has OBrien pressed against the cage.
OBrien tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Matsuda will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning OBrien up against the cage.

Matsuda pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

OBrien shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Matsuda pinned against the cage. Matsuda gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Matsuda manages to get an easy takedown there - catching OBrien on his heels. He'll look to pass OBrien's guard now, I'm sure.

OBrien is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Matsuda presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.
OBrien has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Matsuda avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
OBrien is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath.
Matsuda is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables OBrien to keep the fight standing.
OBrien is trying to drag Matsuda to the mat but Matsuda just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Matsuda lands with a quick shot inside that doesn't really do much damage.
Matsuda jumps guard but OBrien stands there with Matsuda around his waist. Matsuda gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Matsuda manages to break the clinch.
Matsuda is breathing heavily.
OBrien shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Matsuda sprawls well. Matsuda wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. OBrien gets slowly back to his feet.
A quick step to the side and Matsuda tries to counter with a shot to the body but it doesn't connect.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

and Matsuda counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

OBrien defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Matsuda.
OBrien goes for a double leg but Matsuda avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Matsuda continues to drive forward.
OBrien tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Matsuda swivels and escapes.

Matsuda bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Matsuda is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that OBrien can do to turn this around?
OBrien is not content to let Matsuda control the position.
Matsuda sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but OBrien is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Matsuda wants to stand but OBrien is controlling his arm.

Matsuda tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Matsuda has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
OBrien is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

OBrien fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

OBrien stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and OBrien wants it to stay on the feet.

Matsuda throws a counter high kick but OBrien was just alert enough to avoid it.

Matsuda keeps the fight in the clinch, despite OBrien's efforts to push away.
OBrien is trying to force a seperation but Matsuda has the dominant position.

OBrien has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Matsuda uses from the top position.

OBrien has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Matsuda off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Matsuda drives through with a takedown into OBrien's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

OBrien scrambles and gets back to his feet.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from OBrien.
OBrien lands a jab. Then a cross. Then finally a nice hook to the body. Good work there by OBrien.
No luck for OBrien with that takedown attempt.

Matsuda has taken the fight to the clinch.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Ramsey OBrien will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Matsuda has OBrien pressed against the cage, preventing OBrien from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Matsuda tries to close the distance and clinch but OBrien swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Matsuda misses with an uppercut.
Matsuda keeps the fight on the outside.

OBrien misses with a head kick.
Matsuda has a takedown stuffed.
Matsuda slaps away a takedown attempt from OBrien, before circling back to the center of the mat.
OBrien will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
OBrien throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Matsuda sees it coming and avoids it easily.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Matsuda has picked OBrien up - he's going for a ride! Matsuda dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.

OBrien manages to escape and get back to his feet!

OBrien changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Matsuda tries to avoid it but OBrien manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Matsuda to the ground. Matsuda escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
OBrien shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Matsuda as he avoids it easily.

Matsuda gets the takedown into side control.

Matsuda stands up and beckons OBrien to his feet.
OBrien looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Matsuda closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
OBrien is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Akira Matsuda.
I think Matsuda has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
