PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Baro Rizzveira (ranked 3717 p4p, 2366 weight class) and Kenny Mason (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rizzveira kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Itsári- Sepultura. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Baro Rizzveira!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 2 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Kenny Mason!
The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Thiago Cunha and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Rizzveira gets caught flat footed, as Mason shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Mason tries to free his leg and advance position but Rizzveira is retaining full guard.
Mason is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Rizzveira can't keep his opponent in guard - Mason advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Mason thows a huge punch but Rizzveira dodges it nicely.
Mason wants to stand but Rizzveira has hold of a leg and an arm, so he's trapped for now.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mason seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Mason thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Rizzveira keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Rizzveira is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Mason is controlling the pace.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Mason is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Rizzveira is just riding it out for now. Mason eventually gives up the hold.
My spies in Rising Sun Training inform me that Mason has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!
Mason is taking a breather. Rizzveira says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Mason manages to break the clinch.
Mason connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Rizzveira momentarily.

and Rizzveira counters with an inside leg kick.

and Rizzveira counters with a flying knee. Nice.

Mason has taken the fight to the clinch.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
Rizzveira keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Mason's efforts to push away.
Mason avoids the elbow strike from Rizzveira, against the cage.

The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.
Mason escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
We've been told by Rizzveira's head coaches at Cozad MMA Rio that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Rizzveira circles away from the clinch attempt.
Rizzveira throws a quick counter head kick but Mason was just out of range.

Mason dives in and scores a takedown into Rizzveira's guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Mason throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Rizzveira wants to hit a sweep here but Mason passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Rizzveira there!
Rizzveira manages to regain half guard. Good work.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Mason seems to be working for a kimura but Rizzveira defends the submission attempt.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mason lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Kenny Mason dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Mason clinches up with Rizzveira and pushes him back against the cage.

Mason pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Mason throws a sloppy head kick
and Rizzveira counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.
The fight stays on the outside here - Mason looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Rizzveira was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.
Left hook, right uppercut from Rizzveira.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Mason clinches up with Rizzveira and pushes him back against the cage.
Rizzveira using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Mason has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

Mason escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Mason throws a head kick that misses.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Mason misses with a takedown attempt - Rizzveira sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Rizzveira fakes the leg kick and cracks Mason in the body.
Mason is breathing heavily.
Rizzveira on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Mason shoots for a double leg takedown but Rizzveira sprawls well. He's pushed Mason's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Rizzveira tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Mason paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Baro Rizzveira is winning the standup battle so far.

Mason shoots in and gets a takedown into Rizzveira's guard.

Mason avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Rizzveira is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Mason trying to control but Rizzveira is working from the bottom.
Kenny Mason has got the better of the ground game so far.
Mason is looking to work some ground and pound but Rizzveira has wrist control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Mason wants to stand but Rizzveira has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Rizzveira working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Mason.
Mason has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Rizzveira looking for subs off his back but Mason has passed one foot through into half guard.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Well, if Mason is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Mason looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Kenny Mason will probably get the nod - 10:9.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

Mason tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Rizzveira swivels and escapes.
Rizzveira quickly followed up with a counter body kick but doesn't connect.

Rizzveira fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Mason, pushing him back against the cage.
Rizzveira is trying to break the clinch but Mason is controlling him.

Mason has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Rizzveira is trying to keep an underhook but Mason manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Mason is looking for a kimura but Rizzveira is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Mason to get the leverage.

Rizzveira has hold of Mason's hands but Mason slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow.

Mason's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

Mason shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Rizzveira napping and manages to drive through into side control!

Mason is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Rizzveira knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Mason takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Rizzveira can't do much from the bottom here.
Baro Rizzveira has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Mason is staying tight to Rizzveira's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Rizzveira tries to bench press Mason off him but Mason keeps the position.

Mason is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Rizzveira is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Mason staying calm.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Rizzveira tries to improve position but can't.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Mason tries to move to mount but Rizzveira blocks the move with his legs.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

And that's the end of the fight!
Kenny Mason comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Mason winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
