Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between BJ Penn (ranked 3184 p4p, 25395 weight class) and John Taylor (ranked 267 p4p, 382 weight class). Penn comes to the cage accompanied by Hawaii '78. John Taylor has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, BJ Penn! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, John Taylor! The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, James Ackerman and Richard Clark.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Nice shot by Penn. Penn lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!
Penn lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin. Penn looking to score a takedown here. Taylor is defending well but Penn drives through and ends up in Taylor's guard. Penn sitting in guard, not really doing much. Penn drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Penn jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Taylor is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Penn is aware though and is defending well. Penn has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Penn thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Penn is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
That's one minute gone in the round. Taylor working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Penn doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Penn manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Penn slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Taylor keeping full guard, as Penn tries to pass. Penn showing good wrestling skills to control the position. Penn seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Taylor for as long as he can get away with. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Penn's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. Penn's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Penn duly obliges.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Taylor staying out of range there. Taylor changes levels for a counter takedown but doesn't follow through with his attempt. Taylor's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Penn connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Taylor scrambles back to his feet. Penn scores with a nice strike. Penn shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Taylor napping and manages to drive through into side control! Penn taking a breather here. Taylor is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Penn swings around for an armbar but Taylor sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Penn's guard. Penn has an active guard here but Taylor has managed to pass into half guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Taylor trying to control from half guard but Penn is working away. Penn is looking for a sweep. Taylor is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Penn is trying to control but can't.
Taylor is looking to take a break and control but Penn is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Penn wants to get back to full guard. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Penn trying to hold on to Taylor's head to control him but Taylor postures up.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Penn is controlling Taylor's trapped leg to prevent Taylor from advancing to side control. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
BJ Penn dominated that round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. Taylor misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Penn leaves Taylor with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Penn scores with a one two! Taylor had his feet all tangled up there and couldn't avoid the strikes. Penn keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Taylor fails with a takedown attempt from distance. BJ Penn has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of John Taylor. Penn shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard. Penn sitting and controlling from the half guard. Taylor is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Penn pulls his head out easily. Taylor is breathing heavily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Penn seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Penn trying to pass the guard but Taylor defending well. Penn is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.

That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Penn seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. Penn lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears. Penn scoring with strikes to the body and head. Penn is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Taylor is just riding it out for now. Penn eventually gives up the hold. Penn content to sit in half guard and control for a moment. Penn is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Taylor defends it well.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Penn uses his free foot to push down on Taylor's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Taylor. Penn looking to finish Taylor with some ground and pound. This is bad for Taylor! Taylor tries to hold on but Penn pushes him away. Penn goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Taylor turns into him and now he's in Penn's guard.
BJ Penn overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Penn is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Penn working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Taylor has passed into half guard!

Taylor works his way into side control. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Penn looks to move to half guard but instead Taylor has passed into mount! Damn! And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
BJ Penn dominated that second round. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round! Penn works the jab nicely. Some wild striking there from Penn.
John Taylor is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Taylor gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there. Nice uppercut lands for Penn. That snapped Taylor's head back.
Penn lands with a right hand. Penn closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Taylor looking for submissions off his back. Penn seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Taylor is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!
