PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Thomas Banton (ranked 25368 p4p, 4209 weight class) and John Cena (ranked 480 p4p, 432 weight class). Cena has chosen 28 by Zach Bryan as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Thomas Banton!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, John Cena!
The judges for this bout are Richard Clark, Donald Grub and James Atkins.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Cena has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Cena might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Banton haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Banton throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Cena's head.
Cena changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Banton tries to avoid it but Cena manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Banton to the ground. Banton escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Banton tries to counter by clinching up but Cena breaks away and moves out of range.

Cena doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Banton counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Banton.
Thomas Banton has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of John Cena.
Banton lands a left hand that snaps the head of Cena backwards.
Banton using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Cena has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Cena is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Banton gets underhooks to prevent Cena's takedown attempt.

Cena is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Banton can't fight it off and eventually Cena manages to take the fight to the floor. Banton looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Banton is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Banton is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Cena looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Banton is trying to control the position but Cena postures up.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Banton postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Cena is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Banton, into his guard.

Cena is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Cena passes Banton's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Cena is keen to just control but Banton is a slippery customer.
Banton looks like he's trying to stand up.
Cena wants to take a breather but Banton is having none of it.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Cena is trying to control. Banton wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
John Cena seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Banton shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Cena is trying to defend but Banton finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Banton is thwarting Cena's attempts to control the position.
Cena makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Cena.
Cena bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Banton's guard.

Cena is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!
Banton really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Cena working to secure an arm triangle but it's not happening for him just yet.
Cena is trying to control here but Banton has managed to regain half guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Banton won't allow Cena to pass to mount.
Cena is breathing heavily.
Cena works his foot free and advances to mount.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

John Cena showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Banton's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Cena is looking to clinch but Banton is avoiding it.

Banton stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.

Cena jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Banton walks away with a smile on his face. Cena gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Cena moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Banton has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Cena wants to sweep but no luck.
Banton won't allow Cena to get back to his feet.

Banton is trying to tuck his arms in to keep them safe but Cena has managed to isolate one of them and has got a loose triangle. Banton is looking to defend but Cena has done well to lock his legs together - this could be big trouble for Banton! Cena pulls down on the head and a little smile comes across his face - he knows he's got it. Yep, Banton taps out and this one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:55 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). John Cena!
