Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 2 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Joao Mendigo! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Slick Johnson! The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, George Francis and Chris Downing.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Johnson fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Mendigo sprawls well initially but Johnson persists and gets the takedown into half guard. The fighters are battling for position here. Mendigo manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Mendigo wants to stand up but Johnson is controlling him. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Johnson looking to pass the guard. Johnson has gone for a leg lock! Mendigo slips out almost immediately though and dives into Johnson's guard. Johnson looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Mendigo puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard. Johnson is trying to get back to full guard. Johnson is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Mendigo with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. Johnson gets back to full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mendigo trying to control but Johnson is working from the bottom. Johnson escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Mendigo gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Johnson working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Mendigo doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Johnson is tightening it up a little... Mendigo has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Mendigo reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Mendigo taps out! nice BJJ there by Johnson!
