The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Gardener closes the distance and pushes Hughes back into the ropes. Gardener has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Hughes after a bit of a struggle. Gardener goes for a takedown in the clinch but Hughes prevents it.
Hughes has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Gardener regains guard immediately. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Gardener (0) vs (2) Hughes Gardener wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now. Hughes trying to control but Gardener is working from the bottom. Gardener tries to land a sweep but no joy. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Gardener is on top in guard.

Gardener controls from within his opponent's guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Hughes is looking for a guillotine. Hughes looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Gardener is defending well. Hughes quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Gardener has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Hughes celebrates on the ropes, with the crowd.
