Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Kelly Van Soest (ranked 870 p4p, 2631 weight class) and Tommy Chang (ranked 83 p4p, 222 weight class). Van Soest comes to the cage accompanied by Philipee Rochard - The World (Frequencerz Remix). Both fighters look pumped up here. Let's hope this is a good fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kelly Van Soest! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 7 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Tommy Chang! The judges for this bout are Hugh Johnson, Eliza Hachem and Francis DeMontford.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Van Soest takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness. Van Soest looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight. Van Soest throws out a loose jab but Chang uses good head movement to avoid it. Chang leaves Van Soest with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Chang throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Chang looks to throw the jab but Van Soest is out of range. Chang fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Van Soest manages to avoid it. Van Soest attempts a counter takedown but Chang avoids it well and moves away. Chang looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. Van Soest uses good footwork to get in and out, landing a nice hook. Van Soest avoids the head kick by Chang.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Chang throws a hook but Van Soest blocks it. Chang misses with a body kick. Van Soest appears to be looking for a counter takedown. Chang takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it. Van Soest misses with a takedown attempt - Chang sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
That's one minute gone in the round. No joy there for Chang, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Van Soest drops down looking for a counter takedown but Chang sprawls and moves away. Chang scores with a slapping inside leg kick. Van Soest changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Chang tries to avoid it but Van Soest manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Chang to the ground. Chang escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kelly Van Soest. That's going to take a lot out of him. Van Soest defending well as Chang loads up on a big left hand. Chang throws a right hand that misses
and Van Soest counters with a shoot takedown. Chang fights it but they end up in guard. Chang working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Van Soest has passed into half guard!
Chang wants to control but Van Soest is keeping busy.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Van Soest is thwarting Chang's attempts to control the position. Chang wants to improve his position but Van Soest is controlling well.

Van Soest looking to finish Chang with some ground and pound. This is bad for Chang! Van Soest tries to control but Chang wriggling away. Chang wants to hold on but Van Soest pushes him away. Chang is working to get back to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Van Soest tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

Van Soest can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Chang is looking to escape. Van Soest lands a heavy elbow. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Kelly Van Soest dominated that round. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. A left lands for Chang. Chang gets off balance looking for a body kick and Van Soest counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Chang! Chang is trying to improve his position. Van Soest working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter. Chang is looking for a sweep. Chang is not content to let Van Soest control the position. That's one minute gone in the round. Chang is trying to improve his position. Chang is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Van Soest's leg. He's managed it. Nice work. Van Soest lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt. Chang has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at The Purpose Martial Arts Academy. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one. Van Soest thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Chang's head. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. The fighters are battling for position here. Chang manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Van Soest won't allow Chang to sweep him here. Van Soest is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Chang can do to turn this around? Van Soest in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Chang wants to sweep but no luck. Chang is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Chang controls Van Soest momentarily but Van Soest frees himself. Chang is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Van Soest defends well. Van Soest trying to control the position from guard on top but Chang is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Chang is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Chang had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Van Soest defends it easily. Van Soest stands up over Chang, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. Chang has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Van Soest can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Chang is trying to control the position from the bottom.
That's four minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Chang isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Van Soest stacks Chang on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Van Soest! Chang is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard. Chang has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Van Soest is working away from the top position though. Nice strikes from Van Soest there. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Van Soest drops an elbow to the side of Chang's head. It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Van Soest here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man. Chang blocking the ground and pound attempt from Van Soest. Van Soest trying to control from half guard but Chang is working away. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Kelly Van Soest dominated that second round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round! Van Soest fails with a takedown attempt. Tommy Chang has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Chang lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise. Van Soest takes a swing at Chang's ribcage but misses. Van Soest ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Chang moves away. Chang just misses with a punch to the body.

Chang lands the left hand. Van Soest connects with a crisp jab. Van Soest pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Chang back to the cage. Van Soest follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver. Tommy Chang seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
That's one minute gone in the round. Chang throws a right and a left that both miss. Chang is looking to chop away at Van Soest's legs. Chang rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Van Soest counters with a nice double leg into side control. Chang won't be happy with that. Chang is trying to improve his position. The referee asks Van Soest politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Van Soest prefers to stall for the moment though. Chang is trying to get back to half guard. Chang keeps trying to improve his position. Chang regains half guard. Van Soest is figuring out what he wants to do next.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Chang controlling the position well. Chang looking for submissions off his back. Van Soest is trying to control the action in half guard but Chang is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Kelly Van Soest overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Van Soest throwing shots but Chang is blocking nicely. Van Soest takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists. Chang is looking to control Van Soest's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Chang avoid being mounted?
That's three minutes gone in the round. Van Soest wants to pass to mount but Chang is defending the position. Van Soest working the head and body with strikes. Chang is looking to improve his position.
Van Soest thows a huge punch but Chang dodges it nicely.
Chang tries to roll over but Van Soest keeps him under control. Chang taking some punishment here, with Van Soest in his half guard. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Chang.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Van Soest prevents Chang from getting the reversal. Chang tries to hold on but Van Soest postures up. Van Soest with shots to the head and body - Chang looks very uncomfortable down there. Chang tries to get back to half guard but can't. Chang gets back to half guard. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Van Soest lands strikes from half guard. Chang connecting with a few gentle strikes.
And that's the end of the fight! Kelly Van Soest showed his dominance in that final round. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Van Soest, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
