And in the blue corner, fighting out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 10 wins and 4 losses; Mark Norman! The judges for this bout are Dean Styles, John Kavanagh and Jonathan Paton.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Norman fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. McCoy sprawls well initially but Norman persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: McCoy (0) vs (2) Norman Norman wants to pass the guard but McCoy is defending well. Norman is thwarting McCoy's attempts to control the position. McCoy is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Norman jumps into side control! Score +3 for passing guard: McCoy (0) vs (5) Norman McCoy is trying to improve his position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. McCoy controls the position for a moment. Norman is looking to take a break and control but McCoy is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. McCoy is looking for a sweep. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. McCoy struggling a bit here. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. McCoy is trying to get back to half guard. Norman taking a breather here.
That's two minutes gone in the round. McCoy is looking to regain half guard here but Norman keeps moving and retains side control. McCoy is trying to control Norman's posture but Norman avoids it. Norman in side control, just content to control the action for now. McCoy is looking for a sweep.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Norman slows the pace down. Norman wants to control but McCoy is keeping him busy. You can see the frustration on McCoy's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. My spies in HELLCADEMY inform me that Norman has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

That's five minutes gone in the round. McCoy gets back to half guard. McCoy tries to get to full guard but Norman has control of the leg. Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Norman in particular looking to stall.
That's six minutes gone in the round. Let's hope that Norman has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. McCoy trying to hold on to Norman's head to control him but Norman postures up.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
That's seven minutes gone in the round. McCoy trying to get back to full guard but Norman takes advantage of the position and moves to full mount! Score +3 for passing guard: McCoy (0) vs (8) Norman McCoy is trying to reverse the position but instead Norman has taken his back - oops! Score +3 for taking back: McCoy (0) vs (11) Norman Norman biding his time, looking for the opening.
McCoy is in a tricky position but he's been working on his transitions down at League of Shadows MMA, so we'll see if he gets out of it. You can see the frustration on McCoy's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
McCoy looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment. Norman just keeping the dominant position. He can't wait too long though, otherwise the referee will stand them back up.
That's eight minutes gone in the round. Norman has the hooks in. McCoy is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted. McCoy is working hard here to advance position. Norman struggling to keep hold of the position.
McCoy tries to roll but Norman sticks to his back.
That's nine minutes gone in the round. McCoy manages to reverse the position and now he's in Norman's guard. Nice work there by McCoy.

But no, Norman has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for McCoy but great work by Norman. Score +4 for clean sweep to past guard: McCoy (5) vs (15) Norman

That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Norman wants to lay and pray for a moment but McCoy keeps working. McCoy struggling a bit here.
That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. McCoy is trying to improve his position. Well,McCoy is on his way to losing a decision here. Can he use his experience to pull something off in the closing minutes? Norman moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now. Norman's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. McCoy is trying to control Norman's posture but Norman avoids it. Norman controls the position. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! It looks like Norman might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it. McCoy tries to buck Norman off but Norman is having none of it.
And that's the end of the fight! Norman wins on points by 15 to 5. After winning the bout, Mark Norman thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility. |
