This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the light heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of New York, with a TWGC record of 88 wins and 62 losses; Vasiliy Kulik! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Tokyo, with a TWGC record of 2 wins and 5 losses; Test LS! The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, Bruno Lombardi and David Schapiro.
The official calls the fighters to the middle and the contest is under way.
Kulik darts in and clinches LS up against the cage. LS drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Kulik has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics LS uses from the top position. Kulik pulls LS in close to his closed guard and prevents LS from doing any damage or advancing position. LS controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Kulik has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. LS sitting in guard, not really doing much. LS is fighting to break Kulik's control of his arms but Kulik is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. LS wants to control from the top but Kulik keeps moving. LS showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
 That's two minutes gone in the round. LS trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. LS is stalling in the full guard. Kulik keeping moving, preventing LS from controlling successfully.
 That's three minutes gone in the round. LS seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. LS tries to free his leg and advance position but Kulik is retaining full guard. Kulik tries to land a sweep but no joy. Kulik is trying to keep LS in close.
LS drops back, looking for a kneebar! Kulik looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Kulik looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Kulik! Score +4 for clean sweep to past guard: Kulik (4) vs (0) LS
 That's four minutes gone in the round. LS is trying to improve his position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
 That's five minutes gone in the round. LS gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard. LS has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it. Kulik is figuring out what he wants to do next. LS controlling the leg, holding on to half guard. LS is looking for a sweep. Kulik is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
 That's six minutes gone in the round. Kulik slows the pace down in half guard. LS is pressing down on Kulik's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Kulik is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Kulik pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. LS is keeping the position for now. LS looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
 That's seven minutes gone in the round. LS is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Kulik wants to control from the top but LS keeps moving. LS keeping full guard, as Kulik tries to pass.
 That's eight minutes gone in the round. LS is trying to control the position but Kulik postures up. Kulik stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. LS swivels though and keeps the full guard. Kulik controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. LS looking to control.
 That's nine minutes gone in the round. Kulik sitting in guard here, content to control. Kulik looking to pass the guard. Kulik seems content to control from guard here.  That's ten minutes gone in the round. LS bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Kulik's guard. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Kulik (4) vs (2) LS LS stays in close to Kulik's body and controls the position. Kulik looking for a sweep. Not yet Kulik, not yet. LS not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Kulik pulls LS in to control the position.
 That's eleven minutes gone in the round. LS sitting in guard here, content to control. LS wants to control from the top but Kulik keeps moving. Kulik seems keen to control LS's posture. LS slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Kulik can't keep his opponent in guard - LS advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
 That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Kulik is trying to control but LS manages to pass to mount!
Score +3 for passing guard: Kulik (4) vs (5) LS Kulik is trying desperately to improve position. LS can't control as he wanted to and Kulik manages to get the fight back to his half guard.
 That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Kulik has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. LS is working away from the top position though. Kulik tries to get to full guard but LS has control of the leg. LS is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Kulik reverses the position - he's now on top in LS's guard. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Kulik (6) vs (5) LS
 That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. LS wants to hit a sweep here but Kulik passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for LS there! Score +3 for passing guard: Kulik (9) vs (5) LS Kulik trying to control but he's not successful this time. LS working to try and regain half guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Kulik looking to control and managing it successfully.
And that's the end of the fight! Kulik takes the fight on points by 9 to 5. During a confident post fight interview, Vasiliy Kulik thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him. |
