PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Forde Oxmier (ranked 25414 p4p, 5280 weight class) and Khamzat Chimaev (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chimaev has chosen Khamzat Song as his entrance music. Forde Oxmier has a significant reach advantage - let's see if he can make it count.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Forde Oxmier!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Khamzat Chimaev!
The judges for this bout are Kenichi Hosakawa, Yukihiro Yamamoto and Shigeki Fujiwara.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Oxmier changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Chimaev tries to avoid it but Oxmier manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Chimaev to the ground. Chimaev escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Oxmier will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Chimaev tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away.
Oxmier shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Chimaev sprawls well. Chimaev wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Oxmier gets slowly back to his feet.
Oxmier stuffs the takedown.
Oxmier closes this distance looking for a takedown but Chimaev circles away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Forde Oxmier. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Chimaev moves into range and lands a nice body kick.

Oxmier tries to keep at a distance but Chimaev has taken the fight into the clinch.
Come on Chimaev - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Chimaev drops down looking for an ankle pick but Oxmier pulls his leg out and moves away.
Chimaev shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Oxmier sprawls well. Oxmier wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Chimaev gets slowly back to his feet.

Oxmier tries to clinch up.
Oxmier shoots for a double leg takedown but Chimaev sprawls well. He's pushed Oxmier's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Chimaev misses with a double jab.
Chimaev looks to land a combination but Oxmier avoids it well.

and Chimaev counters with a three punch combo that has Oxmier backing up. Oxmier nods at Chimaev to acknowledge the strikes.
Oxmier is breathing heavily.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Chimaev tries for a takedown. No joy.
Chimaev wants to take the fight to the mat but Oxmier manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Chimaev is working for takedown but Oxmier is calmly controlling the position for now.
A nice glancing elbow lands by Oxmier.
Chimaev has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Oxmier after a bit of a struggle.
Oxmier is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Chimaev prevents the takedown attempt.

Oxmier breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Chimaev shoots in and bounces Oxmier off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Chimaev trying to control but Oxmier is working from the bottom.
Chimaev throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Oxmier works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Chimaev trying to control the position from guard on top but Oxmier is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Hammerfist, elbow! yells Chimaev's corner. There ya go! There ya go!
Chimaev postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Oxmier thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Chimaev keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Oxmier's head.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Chimaev throwing strikes but missing.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Chimaev is stalling in the full guard.
Chimaev has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Chimaev connects with a couple of short punches.
Chimaev looking to pass the guard.
Chimaev engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Oxmier trying to keep a closed guard but Chimaev is proving a slippery customer.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Chimaev fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Oxmier, pushing him back against the cage.
Chimaev is working for takedown but Oxmier is calmly controlling the position for now.
Oxmier wants to stall.

Oxmier jumps guard and drags Chimaev to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Chimaev lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Oxmier keeping moving, preventing Chimaev from controlling successfully.
Oxmier is trying to keep Chimaev in close.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Oxmier is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Chimaev is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Khamzat Chimaev dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

Chimaev takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.

and Oxmier counters with a left and a right that stings Chimaev.
Chimaev stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Chimaev wants it to stay on the feet.

Oxmier slaps away a takedown attempt from Chimaev, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Chimaev dives in for a single leg takedown but Oxmier sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
We've been informed that Chimaev has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
No luck for Oxmier with that takedown attempt.

Chimaev closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Oxmier did well to prevent Chimaev getting side control.
Chimaev not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Oxmier moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Chimaev wants to control from the top but Oxmier keeps moving.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Chimaev lands a couple of decent looking shots.
Oxmier utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Oxmier really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
Chimaev stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Oxmier swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Chimaev passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Chimaev grinds an elbow into Oxmier's temple.
Oxmier manages to work his way to half guard, despite Chimaev's best efforts.
Oxmier is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Chimaev maintaining the dominant position here and is working for a kimura. He's locked it up! Oxmier could be in real trouble here! He's trying to wriggle out but Chimaev has cracked it and Oxmier is screaming in pain - he's tapped out! Great finish by Chimaev!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:18 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Khamzat Chimaev!
After winning the bout, Khamzat Chimaev thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
