Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between BJ Penn (ranked 2759 p4p, 3352 weight class) and Rick Viaz (ranked 252 p4p, 299 weight class). Penn comes to the cage accompanied by Hawaii '78. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, BJ Penn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Rick Viaz!
The judges for this bout are William Gold, James Ackerman and James Glass.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn lands with a straight right. Viaz didn't see that one coming.
Viaz fails with an attempt to clinch.
Viaz fails with the takedown
and Penn cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Viaz has his takedown stuffed
and Viaz takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Penn lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range.

BJ Penn has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rick Viaz.
Viaz closes the distance but Penn moves to the side
and Penn counters with a straight right hand.
Penn stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
Penn drops his shoulder and cracks Viaz with a huge uppercut! Viaz goes down! Can Penn finish him?
Viaz is rocked!
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Viaz is trying to control the position from the bottom.

Viaz has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Penn is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Viaz.
Penn has hold of Viaz's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Viaz tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Penn cranks the arm and Viaz screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Viaz, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:41 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). BJ Penn!
