Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Alex Newman (ranked 3767 p4p, 4721 weight class) and Barrett Salinas (ranked 413 p4p, 468 weight class). Newman comes into the arena with Enter Sandman blaring out of the sound system. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Alex Newman! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of London, Barrett Salinas! The judges for this bout are Richard Clark, Chris Edwards and Paul Tew.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Newman misses with a head kick.
Salinas dives in for a single leg takedown but Newman sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage. Salinas rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Newman moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Salinas fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Newman keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
Newman feinted with a counter takedown. A combination from Newman does no damage. Salinas wants to counter with a clinch but Newman pushes him away. Salinas getting the better of the striking in that exchange. Salinas throws a right and a left that both miss. It looked like Newman was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit. Newman scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent. Barrett Salinas seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Newman pushes Salinas up against the cage in a clinch. Salinas is trying to break the clinch but Newman has him pressed against the cage. Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Newman. Newman pulls Salinas into guard.
Newman has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Salinas is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Newman tries for a takedown. No joy.

That's going to take a lot out of Barrett Salinas. Newman manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back. Newman doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Salinas tries to stand but Newman is controlling from the bottom. Newman has his foot on Salinas's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Salinas works his way back into a safe position though.

Salinas is looking to stand up but Newman won't let him. Newman has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Newman is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage. We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup. Newman is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet. Newman takes a shot right to the bread basket. Salinas tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Salinas avoids a punch combination nicely.

Salinas fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Newman avoids it really well and circles away. Newman shoots in for a double leg but Salinas sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Newman pushes Salinas up against the cage in a clinch. Salinas takes a shot to the head. Newman goes for a takedown attempt but Salinas pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Salinas tries to clinch but Newman is having none of it. Salinas misses with a wild body shot. Newman misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Newman throws a sloppy head kick and Salinas moves out of range easily. Salinas tries to counter with a clinch but Newman shakes him off and moves away. Salinas slaps away a takedown attempt from Newman, before circling back to the center of the mat. Newman is breathing heavily. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Nice takedown defense from Newman. No joy for Salinas on that attempt. Alex Newman dominated that round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! Nice sprawl there from Salinas as Newman shoots in. Salinas throws a decent looking leg kick but it doesn't land clean. Salinas goes for a double leg but Newman avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Newman continues to drive forward. It looked like Newman wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit. Salinas misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Newman.

That was a close second round but I would say that Alex Newman will probably get the nod. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round! Salinas throws a solid leg kick but Newman takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Salinas. Newman gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. The fighters are working up against the cage. Newman manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Salinas breaks the clinch.
Salinas will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Newman drops down looking for a counter takedown but Salinas sprawls and moves away. Salinas lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Newman circles away quickly and effectively. Salinas is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Newman rather than just go for the knockout. Salinas wants to clinch up but Newman keeps it at a distance. Salinas tries to close the distance and clinch but Newman swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Newman tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Salinas defends well and Newman ends up having to push Salinas into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. The fighters are pressed against the cage, as the pace of the fight slows. Alex Newman has scored more points in the clinch so far. Newman jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Salinas walks away with a smile on his face. Newman gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head. Alex Newman is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Salinas tries to clinch there but Newman circles away.
Newman will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Alex Newman. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Newman, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent.
