Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Carlos Valverde (ranked 3458 p4p, 3666 weight class) and Baki Hanma (ranked 280 p4p, 298 weight class). Both fighters look pumped up here. Let's hope this is a good fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, for the featherweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Carlos Valverde! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Baki Hanma! The judges for this bout are James Glass, Donald Grub and William Gold.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Hanma tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Valverde swivels and escapes. Hanma shoots in and drives through. Valverde sprawls well. Hanma looks for a takedown but Valverde sprawls well. Carlos Valverde has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Baki Hanma. Hanma defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Valverde. Hanma drops down looking to force a counter takedown but Valverde defends it well. Hanma tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Valverde paws at him with a jab and circles away. Valverde shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Hanma is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Valverde's half guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Hanma seems to be working for a kimura but Valverde defends the submission attempt. Hanma thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Valverde's head.
That's one minute gone in the round. Valverde has one foot on Hanma's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet. Valverde leaves Hanma with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Hanma drives through with a takedown into guard. Hanma being controlled here momentarily. Hanma must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Valverde preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Valverde wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Valverde has his foot on Hanma's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Hanma works his way back into a safe position though.

You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Hanma throws a big right hand that misses. Hanma landing some decent shots from guard. Hanma trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Hanma postures up in Valverde's guard and throws a big left but Valverde blocks it. Valverde has momentary wrist control but Hanma slips an elbow through the middle. Hanma throws a big right hand that misses. Hanma works over Valverde with some ground and pound from guard. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Valverde preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Valverde is pulling down on Hanma's head to control his posture.

Hanma tries to free his leg and advance position but Valverde is retaining full guard. Hanma slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. Hanma tries to land with some ground and pound but misses. Hanma working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter. Hanma creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Valverde sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike. Hanma working the head and body with strikes. The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.

Valverde takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head. Hanma trying to control the position but Valverde is working away. Hanma misses with the ground and pound. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Hanma connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Valverde some visible discomfort.

Valverde closes the distance and clinches. Hanma looking for a takedown. Valverde has hold of one of Hanma's legs. Hanma is fighting the takedown attempt but Valverde gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard. Hanma throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land. Hanma doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Hanma can do anything to dispel that myth. Valverde gets to his feet. Hanma looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son! Valverde drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Baki Hanma has got the better of the ground game so far. Hanma looking to hit a scissor sweep but Valverde is one step ahead there. Hanma is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Valverde is controlling him. Hanma striking off his back but it's not causing Valverde any problems. Hanma is trying to control the position but Valverde postures up. Hanma scores with a couple of body punches from the bottom.

That's two minutes gone in the round. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Valverde. Hanma fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Valverde avoids it really well and circles away. Hanma slaps away a takedown attempt from Valverde, before circling back to the center of the mat. Hanma shoots in looking for a takedown but Valverde manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Hanma's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. It looked like Valverde was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit. Carlos Valverde has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Baki Hanma.

Valverde gets slowly back to his feet. Carlos Valverde seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Hanma darts in looking for a takedown but Valverde gets double underhooks and turns Hanma into the cage. Valverde tries for a takedown but Hanma sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Valverde tightens his grip and picks Hanma up, before dumping him to the ground. Hanma manages to land in guard. Valverde content to stall in guard here. Valverde trying to control but Hanma is working from the bottom. Hanma is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Valverde is aware though and is defending well. Hanma wants to stand but Valverde is controlling the position. Hanma kicks Valverde off and gets to his feet.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Valverde closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. This has been an exciting period of action! You can see the frustration on Hanma's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Valverde tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Hanma looks to move to half guard but instead Valverde has passed into mount! Damn! Valverde landing strikes, looking to finish! Hanma working to try and regain half guard.
Valverde is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Hanma to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Hanma shrugs it off. Hanma is desperately trying to improve his position but Valverde has a good base and remains in mount.

Valverde stands up from the dominant position, so we're back on the feet. Valverde swats away the attempt to clinch by Hanma. Valverde appears to be looking for a big counter. Hanma looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Valverde gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.

Hanma stuffs the takedown. Valverde tries to score a power double leg takedown but Hanma sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Valverde somewhat. Carlos Valverde is winning the standup battle so far. Valverde fails with a takedown attempt. Hanma tries a counter takedown but it's more of a dummy move, and he uses it to push himself away. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Valverde keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl. Valverde changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
