Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Koa Yagan (ranked 2324 p4p, 2491 weight class) and Sean Whelan (ranked 286 p4p, 303 weight class). Sean Whelan told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Koa Yagan! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Sean Whelan! The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Jeff Smith and Paul Gruel.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Whelan misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Yagan.
Yagan throws a sloppy head kick and Whelan moves out of range easily. Whelan now looks to counter with a shot at the body. Yagan avoids the body shot from Whelan.
Whelan lands a nice looking body shot.
Whelan punishes Yagan's body with a nice straight punch. Yagan definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight. Whelan is looking to clinch. Yagan ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. Whelan has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Yagan is landing a low percentage of strikes. Yagan misses with an uppercut. Whelan saw that one coming. Whelan appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Whelan misses with a few strikes there.
Yagan takes a body punch but keeps moving. Whelan throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
That's one minute gone in the round. Yagan uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Whelan.
Yagan appeared to be looking to counter that last move with a leg kick. Whelan scores with a jab to the body. Whelan is looking to clinch but Yagan is avoiding it.
Whelan lands a glancing blow to the side of Yagan's head. Yagan on the wrong end of an overhand right that came out of nowhere. Whelan cracks Yagan with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business. Whelan connects with a jab. Whelan ducks down and throws a hook to the body. Whelan lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Whelan tests Yagan's chin there with a solid looking shot.
That's two minutes gone in the round. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Whelan swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Whelan tries to clinch but Yagan is having none of it. Yagan appears to be looking for a counter punch to the body. Sean Whelan seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Whelan tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Yagan manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Whelan ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Yagan moves away. Yagan swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect. Whelan throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Yagan fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Whelan has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage. Whelan misses with a jab to the body
and Yagan makes him pay by landing a thudding low kick. Whelan closes the distance but Yagan moves to the side and Yagan counters with a low kick, right behind Whelan 's knee. Whelan scores with a body shot.
Whelan ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Yagan moves away.
That's three minutes gone in the round. A left lands for Whelan. Yagan moves out of range as Whelan strikes. Yagan swung with a counter punch to the body but it didn't connect. Whelan throws a body shot but no joy. Whelan throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Yagan sees it coming and avoids it easily. Whelan blocks a low kick nicely. Whelan misses with a telegraphed body shot
and Yagan counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. Yagan scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business. Whelan is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Yagan rather than just go for the knockout. A nice combination there by Whelan.
Whelan scores with a punch to the head. Whelan ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Whelan bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Yagan's head. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Whelan misses the shot to the body. Whelan takes one on the button. A looping hook to the body misses from Whelan. Yagan does a little dance to reset his feet. Whelan misses with a hook to the body
and Yagan counters with a straight right hand. Yagan throws a shot from downtown. Whelan moves away and avoids it. The fighters circling - Whelan throws out the jab but it was never going to land. Whelan connects with a body shot that sends Yagan's belly button to the back. Whelan throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Whelan avoids a low kick by using good footwork. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Sean Whelan dominated that round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Whelan scores with a nice strike. This entire fight has taken place on the feet so far and you wonder whether Yagan might be better served trying to take this one to the ground because he's losing the standup battle so far. Yagan bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Whelan clinches up with Yagan and pushes him back against the cage. Yagan's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. Whelan tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Yagan was well out of range. Poor timing from Whelan. A little feinted left hand from Yagan on the counter but he doesn't commit to it. Whelan throws a poor cross that misses
and Yagan counters with a nice uppercut. Yagan takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it. Whelan misses with a looping right. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Whelan misses with the combination.
Whelan swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
That's one minute gone in the round. Yagan rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Whelan counters with a nice body shot. Whelan gets in close and instigates a clinch. Yagan has not gone for a single takedown so far in this fight, which seems like a very strange tactic when you consider that he has the superior wrestling and BJJ. Yagan is trying to push Whelan away but Whelan has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere. Yagan blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning. Whelan tries a knee to the head but Yagan blocks it.
Whelan lands a nice knee to the body. Whelan misses with a knee strike.
Whelan blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
A short uppercut from Yagan. Whelan looking to throw knees to the head but Yagan is blocking nicely.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Yagan. Whelan tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Yagan avoids it. Whelan misses with a short punch on the inside. Yagan lands with a short head shot on the inside. Whelan throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Yagan blocks it with crossed arms. Yagan lands a left hand.
A left hand lands to the body for Yagan.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Whelan doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Yagan pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. Whelan tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Yagan manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. It looked like Yagan wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit. Whelan moves in looking to clinch but Yagan pushes him off. Yagan drops Whelan with a hook right on the temple. He thinks about going to the ground but Whelan looks back up at him and smiles so Yagan waves him back to his feet - he obviously thinks he can knock him out after that shot landed.
Whelan is rocked! Yagan bobs and weaves and then throws a good body kick. Whelan is still on wobbly legs! Can Yagan finish him? Whelan is breathing heavily. Yagan ducks down into range and throws a picture perfect right hook that connects with Whelan's jaw. Whelan's eyes stare off into space as he falls to the mat, out cold! Yagan does the decent thing and steps back, rather than landing any shots to his unconscious opponent.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:33 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Koa Yagan! Koa Yagan thanked the fans post fight for their support.
