PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight kickboxing rules bout between Edward Krause (ranked 4282 p4p, 4469 weight class) and Gozo Shioda (ranked 345 p4p, 363 weight class). Shioda has chosen Monster Eats Manhattan - Salvation as his entrance music. Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Edward Krause! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Gozo Shioda! The judges for this bout are Shigeki Sano, Yukihiro Yamamoto and Hirohito Nitta.
 The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A combination from Shioda does no damage. Nice defenses there by Krause. Shioda jabs Krause to the body, keeping him at a distance. Shioda throws out a token jab with nothing on it. A looping hook to the body misses from Shioda. Krause does a little dance to reset his feet. Shioda misses with a few strikes there.
Krause works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance. We've been told by Krause's head coaches at Blacktalians MMA that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight. Shioda ducks under a wild hook from Krause. Krause throws a looping overhand right but Shioda ducks down to avoid it. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Shioda misses with a straight left. Shioda works Krause's body with a nice hook. Krause misses with a body shot.
Krause walks into a jab.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Shioda lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
Good standup being displayed there by Shioda as he connects with a hook. Shioda pushing out the jab but it's not landing. The fighters circling - Shioda throws out the jab but it was never going to land. Krause staying out of range there. As Shioda looks to move away, Krause throws a big counter combo but Shioda just gets out of the way. Krause with a body punch. A glancing blow. Krause misses the body punch and Shioda makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range. Shioda misses with a left hand and Krause counters with a lovely shot to the body. Krause defending well as Shioda loads up on a big left hand. Krause slips under a jab from Shioda. Krause catches Shioda with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong! Shioda lands a slapping body shot.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Shioda scores with a jab to the jaw.
 That's two minutes gone in the round. Krause closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so. Shioda misses with an uppercut. Shioda connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
Krause clinches. Shioda throws a punch but it's blocked by Krause. Shioda misses with some punches.
Shioda looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. Shioda tries to work over Krause's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target. Shioda scores with a shot to the side of Krause's head.
Shioda breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Shioda misses with a double jab.
Krause rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Krause takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Shioda lands a nice shot that snaps Krause's head back.
A shot to the body from Krause misses enabling Shioda to counter with a crisp jab. Shioda cracks Krause with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
 That's three minutes gone in the round. Krause misses with the combination.
Shioda looks like he wants to counter punch here. Shioda lands with a right hand. Shioda keeps the fight on the outside. Krause throws a hard body shot but it just misses.

and Krause cracks him with a counter punch right on the button. Krause moves out of range as Shioda strikes. Gozo Shioda seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Krause missing with a left hand there. Shioda was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one. Krause throws a right hand that misses
and Shioda counters with a lovely shot to the body. Shioda throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
 That's four minutes gone in the round. Krause takes one to the side of the head.
Krause gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Shioda misses with a hook. Krause ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Shioda throws an ugly left hook that misses
and Krause counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. A slow jab from Shioda misses its intended target. Shioda misses with an uppercut. Krause saw that one coming. Shioda connects with a jab. Shioda fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Krause manages to avoid it. Shioda takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor. Krause uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Shioda.
Shioda thows a left - swing and a miss! And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Gozo Shioda dominated that round. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Shioda works the jab nicely. Shioda cracks Krause with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business.
Shioda connects with a beautiful left hand that drops Krause onto his butt! Krause bounces straight back up though - he's OK. After the ref checks him out, we're back to the action.
 Krause is rocked! Shioda lands with a good body shot. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Krause avoids the body shot from Shioda.

and Krause counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Krause defending well as Shioda loads up on a big left hand.

Krause catches Shioda right on the button with a cross. Shioda misses with a lunging right hand
and Krause counters with a right hand to the body. Shioda defending well as Krause loads up on a big left hand. Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Shioda, as that shot connected.

 That's two minutes gone in the round. Krause throws a hook but Shioda blocks it. Shioda is pinned up against the ropes taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Krause takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness. Krause keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
It looked like Krause wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit. Krause misses with a hook
and Shioda connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. A shot to the body from Shioda misses and Krause counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. Shioda ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Krause displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Shioda throws out the jab. Shioda's jab looks to have found its range, popping Krause under the eye. Krause's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Shioda connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Krause scrambles back to his feet. Oh Krause is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!! Krause slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range. Shioda defending well as Krause loads up on a big left hand. Krause seems to have got his legs back now.

Krause catches Shioda right on the button with a cross.
 That's four minutes gone in the round. Shioda scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.
Shioda cracks Krause with a left hand that drops him to the canvas, up against the ropes! Can Krause get back up in time? 3, 4, 5, 6, 7... he's on one knee... 8, 9... he's up! 'Walk towards me' says the referee. Krause looks steady enough to continue so we're going to continue! Shioda jabbing away but nothing is landing. Krause swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
Krause has taken the fight to the clinch.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Krause. Krause fails to land with a short punch on the inside.
Krause swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Krause swings wildly with an uppercut but Shioda uses good head movement to avoid it. Shioda blocks a punch to the side of the head.
Shioda can't find room to land a body shot as Krause controls the action.

Shioda lands on the inside with an uppercut. Krause looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that. The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end. Shioda misses with a punch to the body.

Shioda's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. Krause swings for the body but Shioda moves out of range.
A nice side step and Shioda releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Gozo Shioda showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. That's time! Back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!
Shioda gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there. Shioda throws a shot from downtown. Krause moves away and avoids it. A cross from Shioda lands. Krause takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.

and Krause counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. Shioda cracks Krause with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd.
Shioda catches his opponent with a big hook that sends him to the canvas! Krause stumbles back to his feet but will the referee allow it to continue? Krause walks forwards and this one will be allowed to continue! Come on!
Krause walks into a straight right hand and goes down! Shioda rushes to a neutral corner so the count doesn't get delayed but Krause has made it back to his feet on 5. He's OK so we're back to the action. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Krause takes a jab right on the kisser.
Gozo Shioda seems to be getting the better of the standup. Krause takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor. Shioda connects with a crushing straight, right on the bridge of Krause's nose, sending him crumpling to the mat! That's really rocked Krause - is he going to beat the count??? 4,5,6,7,8,9.....10 - he's not made it - this one is all over!
