PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Buddah Joe (ranked 759 p4p, 1059 weight class) and Barron White (ranked 46 p4p, 64 weight class). Barron White will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Buddah Joe!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 38 - 19 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Barron White!
The judges for this bout are Radbod Blank, Paulsen Ambrosius and Nard Betker.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
White ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Joe moves away.
A low kick from White is predictable there

and Joe counters with a single leg into guard. White didn't expect that.
White is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Joe trying to control but White is working from the bottom.
White utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Joe working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Joe wants to control from the top but White keeps moving.
Joe tries to free his leg and advance position but White is retaining full guard.

Joe postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

White trying to keep a closed guard but Joe is proving a slippery customer.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Joe looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Joe looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? White is fending him off so far but Joe persists. Nope, White circles away and we're back to standing.
A looping hook to the body misses from White. Joe does a little dance to reset his feet.
White wants to land a leg kick but Joe is out of range.
Joe ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
White tries to score with a low kick but Joe moves his leg out of the way.
Joe tries to counter with a takedown but White is quick to defend against it.
White swings away with a body shot that misses

and Joe counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Joe trying to control the position from guard on top but White is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Joe engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Joe's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Joe might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Joe throws a big elbow that misses.
White looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

Joe slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.
Joe throws an elbow but White slips to the side and avoids it well.
Joe wants to lay and pray for a moment but White keeps working.

Joe tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Joe has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
White parries the strikes from Joe easily there. Joe is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable White to escape.

Joe is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, White has escaped the position, nice work there.

Joe is staying tight to White's torso, preventing him from escaping.
White tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Joe misses with an attempted head punch from side control.
White is looking for a sweep.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Joe wants to lay and pray for a moment but White keeps working.
Joe takes a little break here. White wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Joe gets the takedown into side control.
Barron White has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
White tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Joe wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

White prevents Joe from moving into mount.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Joe wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by White, who protects the arm well.
White manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

Joe thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Joe is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
White felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Joe throwing shots but White is blocking nicely.

Joe is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so White is just riding it out for now. Joe eventually gives up the hold.
Still in half guard, Joe seems content to control.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
White is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.
Joe is looking to take a break and control but White is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Joe is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that White can do to turn this around?
Joe lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.

Joe wants to work for an arm triangle but White is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Joe looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Buddah Joe overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Joe seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.

Joe is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Joe has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
White has his hands clasped together around Joe's back. He's all about the action.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Joe is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, White has managed to free his arm - good work.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Joe is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Joe wants to control but White is keeping him busy.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

White throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Joe's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Joe appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
No joy there for White, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Joe manages to get an easy takedown there - catching White on his heels. He'll look to pass White's guard now, I'm sure.

Joe has gone for a leg lock! White slips out almost immediately though and dives into Joe's guard.


Joe is looking for a triangle but White pushes his legs off easily.
Joe is trying to control the position but White postures up.

White stands up and waves to Joe to follow him.

White works his jab well there, keeping his opponent at a distance.

Joe closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. White quickly recovers to half guard.

Joe is looking for submissions but instead, White has regained full guard.
White seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Joe pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. White is keeping the position for now.
Joe postures up.

Joe wants to control from the top but White keeps moving.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
White fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Joe avoids the body shot from White.

Joe closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming White to the mat! White manages to get full guard.

Joe is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Joe throwing strikes but missing.
Joe throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as White works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Joe postures up and lands a big shot to White's brow.

Joe landing with the ground and pound.
Joe connects with a couple of short punches.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Buddah Joe.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Joe, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
