PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Big Papa (ranked 25426 p4p, 4093 weight class) and TW GC (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The key to victory for Big Papa has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Big Papa!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, TW GC!
The judges for this bout are Percy O'Donnell, Jack Bonds and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice sprawl there from GC as Papa shoots in.

Papa gets caught napping as GC dives in and scores a takedown. Papa manages to retain guard.
GC sitting in guard, not really doing much.
GC working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Papa striking off his back but it's not causing GC any problems.
GC looking to sit in guard and control but Papa gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Papa throwing strikes but missing.
Papa will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Papa accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
GC thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.

GC throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.

GC looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Papa drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and GC dives on top into guard.

GC trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
GC loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Papa avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
GC sitting in guard, not really doing much.
GC throws a big elbow that misses.

GC sitting in guard here, content to control.
GC throws a big right hand that misses.
GC is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Papa preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Papa throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Papa can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as GC controls the pace.
It looks like GC might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
GC throws a big right hand that misses.

GC controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Papa misses with a takedown attempt

so GC counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Papa is breathing heavily.
GC controlling from the top position.
GC postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
GC is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Papa avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
GC throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Papa works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
GC stands and throws Papa's legs to the side, diving into side control.
GC trying to control the position but Papa is working away.
Papa defending against the ground and pound.
GC working the ground and pound but Papa is defending the strikes.

GC is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Papa knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
You can see the frustration on Papa's face as GC controls the position.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

TW GC dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Papa darts in looking for a takedown but GC gets double underhooks and turns Papa into the cage.
GC throws a counter combo.
Papa gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from GC.

GC gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Papa blocking the ground and pound attempt from GC.
GC thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
GC throwing shots but Papa is blocking nicely.
GC is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.
Papa regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from GC.

GC wants to free his trapped foot but Papa is holding on for dear life with his legs.
GC takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
GC is trying to control the action in half guard but Papa is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

GC is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Papa sees it coming and defends easily.

GC is working for a kimura but Papa is defending it quite comfortably.

Papa looking for submissions from an awkward position here.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Papa won't allow GC to pass to mount.
GC content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
GC thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
GC has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
GC not doing much here.
GC thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Papa's head.

GC tries to pass to full mount but Papa defends it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
GC not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Papa keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

GC is trying to work for a kimura but Papa is defending well.
GC sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Papa defending well though.
Papa avoiding damage under a succession of punches from GC.
GC seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

GC shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Papa is trying to defend but GC finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
GC working over Papa with some ground and pound. Papa looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
GC is looking to take a break and control but Papa is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
GC looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
GC throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

GC looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

TW GC showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

GC will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Papa avoids the body shot from GC.
GC throws a lazy right hand but Papa sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
A nice combination there by Papa.
Papa fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Papa throws a head kick but GC moves out of range.
GC has his takedown stuffed
and Papa counters with a one-two to the body.
GC tries a head kick but it misses.
GC misses with a body punch
and Papa counters with a straight right hand.
GC throws a leg kick but Papa moved away.
Papa tries to clinch but GC is having none of it.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Papa.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Papa avoids a punch combination nicely.

Papa swats away the attempt to clinch by GC.
GC throws a body shot but no joy.
GC avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Nice uppercut lands for Papa. That snapped GC's head back.
Big Papa is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
GC misses the jab.
Papa drops down looking for a counter takedown but GC sprawls and moves away.
GC tries to clinch up.
GC lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Papa circles away quickly and effectively.
Papa misses with a low kick as GC jumps back.
GC throws a right hand that Papa ducks under and follows up with a left that Papa also avoids with ease.
GC wants to clinch but Papa slips to the side
and Papa counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
GC misses with a jab to the body
and Papa counters with a two punch combo.
Papa fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but GC avoids it really well and circles away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Big Papa. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Papa tries to clinch but GC is having none of it.
GC is looking to clinch but Papa is avoiding it.
Papa seemed to be looking to counter by closing the distance.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from GC.
GC looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Papa tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. GC manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
This has been an exciting period of action!

GC gets a takedown into half guard.
GC tries to pass the half guard into mount. Papa knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

GC is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Papa is just riding it out for now. GC eventually gives up the hold.

GC wants to take a breather but Papa is having none of it.
GC sitting and controlling from the half guard.

GC is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
GC throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Papa to regain full guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Papa wants to stand and escape but GC is having none of it.
GC wants to control from the top but Papa keeps moving.
GC throws a big elbow that misses.
Big Papa has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
GC throws an elbow that misses. Papa uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in GC's guard. Nice move by Papa!

GC looking for a sweep. Not yet GC, not yet.

GC has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Papa can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

GC had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Papa defends it easily.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Big Papa.
I think GC has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
