This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the super heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. And in the blue corner, fighting out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 10 wins and 25 losses; Kael Gardener! The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Alan Glass and Wesley Smith.
The official calls the fighters to the middle and the contest is under way. Shart scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Score +4 for clean takedown past guard: Shart (4) vs (0) Gardener Shart is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Gardener has escaped the position, nice work there. Shart controls the position from side control. Gardener is looking for a sweep. Gardener manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu! Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Shart (4) vs (2) Gardener Gardener has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Score +3 for passing guard: Shart (4) vs (5) Gardener The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring. Shart is working to get back to half guard.
Gardener tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Gardener looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Shart is looking to get to half guard. Gardener trying to control but he's not successful this time. Gardener avoids the attempt from Shart to control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gardener controlling from mount. Shart tries to hold on but Gardener postures up. Shart regains half guard. Shart has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Gardener is working away from the top position though. Gardener looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. Gardener trying to control from half guard but Shart is working away. Gardener tries to pass to full mount but Shart defends it. Shart tries to get to full guard but Gardener has control of the leg. Shart looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio. Gardener is trying to control. Shart wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gardener takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Gardener tries to pass to full mount but Shart defends it. Shart trying to control from the bottom.
Shart is staying active underneath Gardener, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Shart is looking to improve his position.
Gardener trying to mount his opponent but Shart defends it. Shart moves into full guard.
Gardener slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Gardener stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Shart swivels though and keeps the full guard. Shart keeping moving, preventing Gardener from controlling successfully.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gardener might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Shart haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time. Gardener pushing down on Shart's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. Gardener performing his best blanket impression for a moment. Gardener is keen to just control but Shart is a slippery customer. Shart trying to control here.
Gardener is figuring out what he wants to do next. Gardener looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Shart is not content to let Gardener control the position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Shart has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Gardener is working away from the top position though. Gardener seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Shart does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Shart is controlling Gardener's position as best he can from this difficult position. Shart is staying active underneath Gardener, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Shart works his way to full guard. Good work. Shart looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Gardener seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Shart has control of Gardener's left arm, preventing Gardener from doing any damage. Gardener's corner is telling him to maintain position. Gardener got a little sloppy there for a moment and Shart has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Gardener has managed to get both his arms back between Shart's legs - danger averted.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Gardener stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Shart swivels though and keeps the full guard. Shart is trying to control the position but Gardener postures up. Shart keeping moving, preventing Gardener from controlling successfully. Shart pulls Gardener in to control the position. Gardener wants to pass the guard but Shart is keeping the position. Gardener trying to control but Shart is working from the bottom. Gardener is posturing up here but Shart has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Gardener tries to roll out but it's too tight and Gardener has to tap! Slick submission there by Shart!
