Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Rafael Gracie (ranked 4919 p4p, 17531 weight class) and Futoshi Matsunaga (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Gracie has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. This should be fireworks!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 10 - 29 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rafael Gracie! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 49 - 31 - 2, fighting out of New York, Futoshi Matsunaga! The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Paulo Santos and Alexandre Firmino.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Matsunaga throws a jab but it's blocked by Gracie. Gracie looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this! Matsunaga throws an overhand right that lands on Gracie's shoulder, as Gracie tries to avoid the shot. Matsunaga misses the jab. Gracie moves out of range of the leg kick from Matsunaga. Matsunaga throws a big shot that misses. Matsunaga jabbing away but nothing is landing. Gracie fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Matsunaga looks to land a right hand but Gracie moved out of range. Matsunaga misses the shot to the body. Matsunaga is looking to land body kicks. Matsunaga ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Gracie moves away. Matsunaga will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Matsunaga tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Gracie was well out of range. Poor timing from Matsunaga. Matsunaga loads up on a big right hand but Gracie slips the punch. Matsunaga misses the shot to the body. Gracie changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit. Matsunaga misses with a wild body shot. Futoshi Matsunaga is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
That's one minute gone in the round. Matsunaga throws an overhand right that lands on Gracie's shoulder, as Gracie tries to avoid the shot. Matsunaga wants to land a leg kick but Gracie is out of range. Gracie slips a jab from Matsunaga. Matsunaga loads up on a big right hand but Gracie slips the punch. Matsunaga ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Gracie moves away. Matsunaga tries to work over Gracie's front leg with a kick but Gracie checks it. Futoshi Matsunaga seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Matsunaga misses with a low kick as Gracie jumps back. A telegraphed right hand from Matsunaga misses the target. Matsunaga fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
The fighters circling - Matsunaga throws out the jab but it was never going to land. Matsunaga just misses with a punch to the body.
Matsunaga misses with a looping right. Matsunaga throws a right and a left that both miss. No joy there for Matsunaga, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Matsunaga throws a low kick but Gracie avoids it.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Matsunaga throws a shot from downtown. Gracie moves away and avoids it. Matsunaga misses with a low kick as Gracie jumps back. Gracie half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range. Sloppy strikes from Matsunaga. Those never looked like landing. Matsunaga swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target. Gracie displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Matsunaga throws out the jab. Matsunaga misses with a kick to the body and Gracie counters with a nice double leg into side control. Matsunaga won't be happy with that. We've been hearing good reports from Gracie's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Matsunaga tries to bench press Gracie off him but Gracie keeps the position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gracie has hold of Matsunaga's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Matsunaga tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Gracie cranks the arm and Matsunaga screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Matsunaga, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:21 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Rafael Gracie!
