PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Rico Salvacion (ranked 23209 p4p, 25100 weight class) and Xi Daerji (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Xi Daerji told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 54 - 65 - 6, fighting out of Las Vegas, Rico Salvacion!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 28 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Xi Daerji!
The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Robert Twigg and Gwen Towbar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Daerji closes the distance and pushes Salvacion back into the cage.

Daerji jumps guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Salvacion looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Salvacion stopping the sweep attempt from Daerji.

Daerji is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Salvacion knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Daerji on the ground.
Salvacion trying to control but Daerji is working from the bottom.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Daerji had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Salvacion defends it easily.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

Daerji shoots in and bounces Salvacion off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Salvacion controls Daerji momentarily but Daerji frees himself.
Daerji's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Daerji trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Salvacion manages to land a sweep and now he's on top!

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Daerji holds on and takes a little breather.

Daerji is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Salvacion is controlling him.

Daerji has Salvacion pulled in close to control his posture.
Daerji is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Daerji looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Still in half guard, Daerji seems content to control.

It looks like Daerji might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.

Daerji looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Xi Daerji dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

Horrible takedown attempt by Daerji or perhaps it was just good defense by Salvacion, which made it look bad.
Daerji swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Salvacion finishes the little exchange by landing a big kick to the body.
Salvacion leaves Daerji with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Daerji moves into the clinch successfully.

Rico Salvacion has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Xi Daerji.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Daerji is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Daerji fails to land the takedown.
Salvacion throws a quick counter kick to the body but Daerji avoids it.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Daerji enables Salvacion to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Daerji manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Daerji has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Salvacion off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.

Salvacion tries to keep at a distance but Daerji has taken the fight into the clinch.
Daerji has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Daerji drags the fight down to the ground.
Daerji pulls Salvacion in close to his closed guard and prevents Salvacion from doing any damage or advancing position.
Salvacion wants to control from the top but Daerji keeps moving.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Daerji is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Salvacion defends well.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Xi Daerji showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

As Salvacion backs off Daerji throws a huge counter combo but Salvacion manages to avoid it all.
Xi Daerji seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Salvacion.
Daerji shoots in for a double leg but Salvacion sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Daerji goes for a double leg but Salvacion avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Salvacion continues to drive forward.

Salvacion tightens his grip and picks Daerji up, before dumping him to the ground. Daerji manages to land in guard.

Daerji shoots in looking for a takedown. Salvacion tries to sprawl out of it but Daerji keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Salvacion manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Salvacion quickly followed up with a counter body kick but doesn't connect.

Daerji rushes Salvacion and presses him up against the cage.
Daerji can't break the clinch.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Daerji has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Salvacion after a bit of a struggle.
Daerji stalling in the clinch.
Daerji lands with a short shot to the head.
Daerji is defending well against a takedown attempt.
Salvacion drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Daerji gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Rico Salvacion has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Rico Salvacion.
I think Daerji has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
