PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Yawa Kiang (ranked 23363 p4p, 23269 weight class) and Wala Sapi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 41 - 80 - 2, fighting out of Las Vegas, Yawa Kiang!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 59 - 53 - 13, fighting out of Las Vegas, Wala Sapi!
The judges for this bout are Robert Twigg, Alan Glass and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight.
Sapi misses with a takedown attempt - Kiang sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Kiang throws a big counter combination but Sapi scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
Kiang shoots in looking for a takedown but Sapi manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Kiang's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Kiang looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Sapi is concentrating on defense, preventing Kiang from advancing position.

Sapi is trying to maintain the position but Kiang is very close to passing his half guard.

Kiang throws a strike but Sapi avoids it easily and moves to full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Sapi has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Kiang can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Kiang controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Kiang seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Sapi for as long as he can get away with.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kiang shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Sapi defends it nicely.
Despite the aggression on Sapi's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.
Sapi fails with the takedown.
Kiang is looking to counter with a body kick.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Sapi pulls Kiang in to control the position.
Sapi can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Kiang controls the pace.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Yawa Kiang dominated that round.
That's time! Kiang's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Sapi shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Kiang but Kiang pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Kiang closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Sapi's guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kiang is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Sapi is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Kiang is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Sapi throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

and Sapi counters with a left and a right that stings Kiang.

Kiang feints and as Sapi raises his hands in defense, Kiang changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Kiang slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Kiang shoots in looking for a takedown. Sapi tries to sprawl out of it but Kiang keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Sapi manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Yawa Kiang dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!


Sapi decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Sapi throws a big elbow that misses, also allowing Kiang to regain full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kiang has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Sapi is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Let's hope that Sapi has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Kiang is pulling down on Sapi's head. It's preventing any offense from Sapi, at least for the moment.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Kiang shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Sapi manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Sapi controlling the position.
Kiang is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Kiang slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
Wala Sapi has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Yawa Kiang is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Sapi wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Yawa Kiang showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Kiang, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
