PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Minatay Mibangon (ranked 23315 p4p, 23323 weight class) and Kulata Bitok (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 47 - 64 - 13, fighting out of Las Vegas, Minatay Mibangon! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 42 - 76 - 7, fighting out of Las Vegas, Kulata Bitok! The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Gwen Towbar and Cecil Peabody.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight. Bitok shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard. Bitok prevents Mibangon from improving his position. Mibangon is trying is best to control the position here. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Bitok is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Mibangon is trying to control but can't.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mibangon has a hand on Bitok's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Bitok takes advantage of the position though and mounts him! Mibangon wants to control but Bitok is having none of it. Bitok lands a couple of good shots and Mibangon has given up his back, trying to escape the position! Mibangon manages to reverse the position and now he's in Bitok's guard. Nice work there by Mibangon.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Mibangon stopping the sweep attempt from Bitok.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mibangon controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Bitok seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Mibangon slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Bitok looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Mibangon controls from within his opponent's guard. Bitok seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now. We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Mibangon controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Bitok is defended easily by Mibangon. Mibangon jinks towards his opponent looking like he wants to counter with a mid kick but doesn't commit. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Mibangon tries for a takedown but Bitok sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Bitok replies with a solid counter kick to the body but Mibangon blocks it well. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Kulata Bitok dominated that round. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
Bitok shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Mibangon napping and manages to drive through into side control! Mibangon tries to improve position but can't. Bitok controls the position from side control. Mibangon is looking to regain half guard here but Bitok keeps moving and retains side control. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Bitok creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Mibangon sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
That's one minute gone in the round. Bitok tries for a kimura but Mibangon is defending well. Bitok remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Let's hope that Bitok has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet. Bitok dives in and grabs Mibangon's left leg, looking for a takedown. Mibangon pushes down on Bitok's head and hops out. It looked like Mibangon was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit. Bitok closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Mibangon to the mat! Mibangon manages to get full guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mibangon pulls Bitok in close to prevent any damage. Mibangon continues to stall. Bitok's corner is telling him to maintain position. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Mibangon holds on and takes a little breather.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Mibangon wants to sweep here but Bitok controlling him for the moment. Mibangon is controlling Bitok's posture. Mibangon being controlled here, momentarily.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Bitok closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Kulata Bitok showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round! Bitok shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Mibangon defends it nicely. Mibangon fails to land the takedown. Bitok flicks out a counter leg kick but Mibangon steps away. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Mibangon has his takedown stuffed and Bitok counters with a nice body kick.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mibangon with a lazy takedown attempt and Bitok counters with a slapping leg kick. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Minatay Mibangon. That's going to take a lot out of him. Bitok drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Mibangon can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Bitok controls the pace.
That's two minutes gone in the round. We're seeing a lot of stalling here from Bitok. Bitok's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mibangon keeping moving, preventing Bitok from controlling successfully. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet. Bitok stays in close to Mibangon's body and controls the position.

That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Mibangon looks for a takedown but Bitok sprawls well. Minatay Mibangon has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Kulata Bitok is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Mibangon shoots in for a double leg but Bitok sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
And that's the end of the fight! Kulata Bitok comfortably won the final round on my scorecard. Well Bitok has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
