PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Clark Zapata (ranked 25020 p4p, 25050 weight class) and Wayne Martin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Zapata comes to the cage accompanied by Alab ng Puso. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Clark Zapata!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Wayne Martin!
The judges for this bout are Frank Dennis, Stewart Dunkirk and Daniel Franklin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Zapata fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Sloppy strikes from Zapata. Those never looked like landing.
Clark Zapata seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Zapata takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Martin should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Zapata shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Martin sprawls well. Martin wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Zapata gets slowly back to his feet.
Zapata misses with a two punch combination.
Martin goes for a spinning back kick but it misses.
Zapata blocks a head kick by Martin.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Martin.
Zapata shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Martin counters by moving into the clinch.

Zapata pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Zapata lands with a hook. Martin tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.

We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Martin has eaten all the pies!

Zapata pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Martin shoots in looking for a takedown. Zapata tries to sprawl out of it but Martin keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Zapata manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Zapata leaves Martin with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Martin tries a head kick but it misses.

Zapata tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Martin manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Martin on the wrong end of a nice hook.

Zapata has taken the fight to the clinch.
Martin can't break the clinch.

Martin jumps into guard, dragging Zapata to the mat.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Zapata is fighting to break Martin's control of his arms but Martin is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Zapata has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Martin is proving hard to escape from.
Zapata prevents Martin from getting back to his feet.
Martin is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Martin holds on and takes a little breather.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Martin shoots in and drives through. Zapata sprawls well.
Zapata displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Martin.

and Zapata connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Zapata tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Martin smiles and moves away.
Zapata tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Martin paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Martin forces Zapata back against the cage and clinches.
Martin has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Zapata after a bit of a struggle.
Zapata on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Zapata is trying to pull guard but Martin turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Zapata wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Zapata jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Martin walks away with a smile on his face. Zapata gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Martin throws a sloppy head kick and Zapata moves out of range easily.
Zapata shoots in but no luck this time.
Zapata tries to clinch up.
Zapata doesn't manage to clinch there - Martin circles away.
Zapata keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Wayne Martin dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

No luck for Martin with that takedown attempt.
Zapata tries to clinch but Martin is having none of it.
Martin has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Martin shoots in but no luck this time.
Zapata is using his reach advantage well here, landing the more effective single shots from range.
Martin throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Zapata's waist but Zapata gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Martin off to one side.

Martin has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Zapata is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Zapata lands with a nice combination. Martin backs away looking to recover.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

The fight stays on the outside here - Zapata looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Martin changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Zapata tries to avoid it but Martin manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Zapata to the ground. Zapata escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Wayne Martin comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Martin has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
