PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Temmu Pukki (ranked 1358 p4p, 2117 weight class) and Stanley Emelianenko (ranked 173 p4p, 269 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Temmu Pukki!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Stanley Emelianenko!
The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Yasuomi Hirokawa and Shirou Masuda.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Emelianenko throws a sloppy head kick and Pukki moves out of range easily.
We've been told by Pukki's head coaches at The Tank Factory that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight.
Emelianenko closes this distance looking for a takedown but Pukki circles away.
Pukki misses with a looping left.
Pukki stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Pukki wants it to stay on the feet.
Pukki throws a looping overhand right but Emelianenko ducks down to avoid it.
Pukki throws out a loose jab but Emelianenko uses good head movement to avoid it.

Emelianenko has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Pukki is landing a low percentage of strikes.

Pukki is pushing down on Emelianenko's leg trying to pass to half guard. Emelianenko is fighting to maintain full guard but Pukki has managed to sneak the leg through.

Emelianenko has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Pukki is working away from the top position though.
Pukki is pressing down on Emelianenko's thigh, looking to free his foot. Emelianenko is holding on for now.
Pukki is looking to stall here but Emelianenko recovers full guard.
Emelianenko is trying to keep Pukki in close.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Emelianenko is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Emelianenko.
Pukki throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Emelianenko tries for a takedown but Pukki sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Emelianenko shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Pukki pinned against the cage. Pukki gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

A momentary lapse in concentration from Emelianenko enables Pukki to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Emelianenko manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Emelianenko escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Pukki gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Pukki throws a body punch but Emelianenko moves out of range.

Stanley Emelianenko is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Pukki fails to land with a series of punches.

and Pukki takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Pukki is stalling here. Emelianenko is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Pukki seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Emelianenko has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Emelianenko seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Pukki does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Emelianenko is on top in guard.

Pukki is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Temmu Pukki showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Pukki, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
