The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way.
Karelin doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Blue decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Karelin's guard.

Karelin is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

Blue is pressing down on Karelin's thigh, looking to free his foot. Karelin is holding on for now.

Karelin tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Blue wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Blue is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Karelin is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Karelin seems a little lost for a moment, as Blue dominates the positioning.
Karelin felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Blue is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Karelin is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Blue tries to move into full mount but can't pass Karelin's legs.

Blue thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Karelin is staying active underneath Blue, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Karelin wants to control but Blue is keeping busy.

Blue jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Karelin is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Karelin and Blue has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

Blue swings around for an armbar but Karelin sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Blue's guard.

Karelin slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Blue wants to control but Karelin postures up.
Karelin moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Blue is trying to improve his position.

Karelin wants to lay and pray for a moment but Blue keeps working.

Karelin is looking to take a break and control but Blue is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Blue takes the fight on points by 8 to 5.
