This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Hilo, with a TWGC record of 15 wins and 14 losses; Big Dog Gracie! And in the blue corner, fighting out of New York, with a TWGC record of 107 wins and 57 losses; Nick Rodriquez! The judges for this bout are Ian Loll, Alec Ball and Robert Douchet.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight.
Gracie changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Rodriquez looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Score +4 for clean takedown past guard: Gracie (4) vs (0) Rodriquez Gracie takes a little break here. Rodriquez wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well. Gracie wants to control but Rodriquez is keeping him busy. Rodriquez is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Gracie content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though. Rodriquez has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gracie seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Rodriquez for as long as he can get away with.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Rodriquez manages to get back to half guard. The fighters are battling for position here. Rodriquez manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Rodriquez looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Gracie tries to free his leg and advance position but Rodriquez is retaining full guard. Gracie forces his way into half guard. Gracie performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
 That's two minutes gone in the round. Gracie has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. Gracie trying to mount his opponent but Rodriquez defends it. Rodriquez wants to get back to full guard.
 That's three minutes gone in the round. Rodriquez is controlling Gracie's position as best he can from this difficult position. Gracie takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Rodriquez wants to control but Gracie is keeping busy and won't allow it. Gracie stalling.  That's four minutes gone in the round. Gracie controlling the pace for now. We've been hearing good reports from Gracie's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Rodriquez is writhing around trying to get back to his feet. Gracie tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Gracie wants to take Rodriquez's back here but Rodriquez is holding on to an arm, himself looking to escape.
 That's five minutes gone in the round. Rodriquez wants to control but Gracie is having none of it. Gracie controlling the pace for now. Rodriquez is trying desperately to improve position. Rodriquez wants to hold on but Gracie pushes him away.
 That's six minutes gone in the round. Rodriquez is looking to get to half guard. Gracie wants to take Rodriquez's back but he can't do it this time. Rodriquez is squirming around, avoiding Gracie's attempts to control the action. Gracie tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.  That's seven minutes gone in the round. Gracie wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.
 That's eight minutes gone in the round. Gracie is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Rodriquez wants to control from the top but Gracie keeps moving. Gracie has his hands on Rodriquez's head, controlling the position.
 That's nine minutes gone in the round. Rodriquez passes Gracie's left leg - he's now in half guard. Rodriquez is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Gracie! Score +3 for passing guard: Gracie (7) vs (5) Rodriquez Gracie bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done! Gracie looking to pass the guard.
 That's ten minutes gone in the round. Gracie controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Rodriquez is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Gracie sitting in guard, not really doing much. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Gracie continues to stall.
 That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Rodriquez can't keep his opponent in guard - Gracie advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
 That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Gracie tries to pass to full mount but Rodriquez defends it.
Gracie looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Rodriquez is looking to improve his position.
 That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Gracie takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Rodriquez moves into full guard.

 That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Gracie controlling Rodriquez's posture. Gracie wants to sweep here but Rodriquez controlling him for the moment. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Rodriquez wants to control from the top but Gracie keeps moving.
And that's the end of the fight! Gracie takes the fight on points by 9 to 7. Big Dog Gracie bigged himself up after the win. The crowd seemed to love it. |
