This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the welterweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 15 wins and 8 losses; Mark Norman! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Las Vegas, with a TWGC record of 63 wins and 59 losses; Esteban Mondragon! The judges for this bout are Trevor Gratis, Ian Loll and William Peck.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way.
Norman darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Norman (2) vs (0) Mondragon Mondragon is controlling Norman's trapped leg to prevent Norman from advancing to side control. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Norman controlling the action here. Norman passes to side control. Score +3 for passing guard: Norman (5) vs (0) Mondragon The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Mondragon tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Norman wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Norman is staying tight to Mondragon's torso, preventing him from escaping. Mondragon is trying to improve his position. We've been hearing good reports from Norman's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Norman working away.
 That's two minutes gone in the round. Mondragon is looking to regain half guard here but Norman keeps moving and retains side control. The referee asks Norman politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Norman prefers to stall for the moment though. Mondragon is trying to get back to half guard. Norman staying calm.
 That's three minutes gone in the round. Mondragon is looking to reverse the position. Mondragon manages to work his way to half guard, despite Norman's best efforts. Norman is thwarting Mondragon's attempts to control the position. Mondragon tries to roll over but Norman keeps him under control.
 That's four minutes gone in the round. Norman trying to pass the guard but Mondragon defending well. Mondragon trying to hold on to Norman's head to control him but Norman postures up.
Norman slows the pace down in half guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Norman looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
 That's five minutes gone in the round. Norman sitting and controlling from the half guard. Mondragon tries to roll over but Norman keeps him under control. Norman wants to lay and pray for a moment but Mondragon keeps working.
 That's six minutes gone in the round. Mondragon controlling the leg, holding on to half guard. Norman trying to mount his opponent but Mondragon defends it.
 That's seven minutes gone in the round. Mondragon is looking to improve his position.
Norman slows the pace down in half guard. Mondragon wants to improve his position but Norman is controlling well.
 That's eight minutes gone in the round. Mondragon holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now. Norman is taking a breather. Mondragon says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Mondragon is concentrating on defense, preventing Norman from advancing position. Norman wants to pass to mount but Mondragon is defending the position. Mondragon is trying to get back to full guard.
 That's nine minutes gone in the round. Mondragon is doing well to control the position and prevent Norman from advancing to side control. Mondragon wants to control but Norman is keeping busy and won't allow it. Norman is figuring out what he wants to do next. Mondragon has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Norman is working away from the top position though.
 That's ten minutes gone in the round. Mondragon tries to roll over but Norman keeps him under control. Mondragon has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at HELLCADEMY. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one. Mondragon keeping hold of Norman's head, controlling as best he can. Norman tries to pass to full mount but Mondragon defends it.

Norman prevents Mondragon from improving his position. Norman seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
 That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Mondragon has his hands clasped together around Norman's back. He's all about the action. Mondragon is trying to maintain the position but Norman is very close to passing his half guard. Norman stalling.
 That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Mondragon tries to roll over but Norman keeps him under control. Mondragon is looking to control Norman's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Mondragon avoid being mounted?
 That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Norman is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount! Score +3 for passing guard: Norman (8) vs (0) Mondragon Norman tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Mondragon tries to hold on but Norman pushes him away.
And that's the end of the fight! Norman takes the fight on points by 8 to 0. During a confident post fight interview, Mark Norman thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him. |
