Hughes has an active guard here but Shimada has managed to pass into half guard.
Hughes is trying to control but can't.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves. Hughes is not content to let Shimada control the position. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Hughes is looking to control Shimada's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Hughes avoid being mounted? Shimada controlling the pace. Hughes tries to roll over but Shimada keeps him under control. Hughes is trying to maintain the position but Shimada is very close to passing his half guard.

Hughes is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Shimada is aware though and is defending well. Hughes trying to keep a closed guard but Shimada is proving a slippery customer.
Hughes wants to hit a sweep here but Shimada passes into full mount! Oh no, disaster for Hughes there! Score +3 for passing guard: Shimada (5) vs (5) Hughes Shimada can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Hughes is looking to escape. Shimada fails to advance to Hughes's back.

Hughes tries to hold on but Shimada pushes him away. Shimada manages to capitalize on a mistake by Hughes to take his back! Score +3 for taking back: Shimada (8) vs (5) Hughes You know, I was talking to some of our celebrities at ringside tonight and they were split right down the middle on who was going to win this fight.
Shimada seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission. Shimada is working for a rear naked choke. Hughes is not defending it well and Shimada has tightened it up quickly! This could be all over! Hughes refuses to tap and goes to sleep, forcing the referee to intervene. A little trickle of blood came out of Hughes's nose as his head slumped to the floor. That is naaaasty!
