And in the blue corner, fighting out of New York, with a TWGC record of 8 wins and 4 losses; Loki Kvakkestad! The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, Jonathan Paton and Chad Campbell.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way.
Kvakkestad bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Score +4 for clean takedown past guard: Shimada (0) vs (4) Kvakkestad
Kvakkestad is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Shimada has escaped the position, nice work there. Kvakkestad wants to control for a moment but Shimada uses the opportunity to move back to half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Shimada tries to get to full guard but Kvakkestad has control of the leg. Shimada has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Kvakkestad is working away from the top position though. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kvakkestad is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Shimada doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Kvakkestad. Kvakkestad trying to control from half guard but Shimada is working away.

Kvakkestad tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Kvakkestad thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Kvakkestad is trying to get an arm triangle but Shimada is defending well. Shimada is trying to escape the position but Kvakkestad is controlling the position.
Kvakkestad working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Kvakkestad is working to tighten his grip on Shimada's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Shimada has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Kvakkestad is really squeezing tight and eventually Shimada passes out! Kvakkestad breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!
