Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Sergei Sokolov (ranked 1757 p4p, 1610 weight class) and Rylan Wheeler (ranked 223 p4p, 202 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 7 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Sergei Sokolov! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 14 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Rylan Wheeler! The judges for this bout are Anthony Taglia, Franklyn Lucas and Russell Pearce.
 The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sokolov lunges at Wheeler with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Wheeler's hand. Sokolov lands with a hook. Wheeler tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head. Sokolov lands a glancing blow to the side of Wheeler's head. Sokolov wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection. Wheeler swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Sokolov fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Wheeler manages to avoid it. Wheeler swings away with a counter right hand but no contact made. Sokolov staying out of range there. Wheeler throws a big shot that misses. Wheeler throws an overhand right that lands on Sokolov's shoulder, as Sokolov tries to avoid the shot. Wheeler with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Sokolov to score with a decent uppercut. Wheeler ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent. Sokolov shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Wheeler defends it nicely. Sokolov takes a body punch but keeps moving. This has been an exciting period of action! Sokolov bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Wheeler's head.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Wheeler takes one to the chin there. Wheeler connects with a jab. We've been hearing reports that Sokolov has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Sokolov fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Wheeler sprawls well initially but Sokolov persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Sokolov controlling the action here.

Sokolov looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. Sokolov wants to control but Wheeler is keeping him busy.

Wheeler looking for submissions off his back. Wheeler taking some punishment here, with Sokolov in his half guard. Wheeler is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Sokolov scores with a couple of nice shots. Sokolov looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Wheeler with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Well, if Sokolov is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight� I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza� Yum. Can't wait.
Wheeler is trying to get back to full guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Sokolov takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.
 That's three minutes gone in the round. Wheeler wants to get back to full guard. Sokolov perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. Wheeler gets full guard.

 The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Wheeler is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Sokolov with a nice head shot there. Sokolov trying to control the position from guard on top but Wheeler is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
 That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Sokolov is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound. Sokolov wants to control from the top but Wheeler keeps moving. Sokolov working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Wheeler's head.
Wheeler looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Sokolov has picked Wheeler up and slammed him! Wheeler can't keep hold of the triangle and Sokolov manages to pass to side control! Wheeler is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Sokolov's leg. He's managed it. Nice work. Nice strikes from Sokolov there.
Wheeler looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Sokolov seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Sokolov bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Wheeler's head backwards. Sokolov avoids a lazy jab quite easily. Sokolov takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Wheeler gets caught napping as Sokolov dives in and scores a takedown. Wheeler manages to retain guard.

Wheeler escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Sokolov gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Sokolov slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Sokolov is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Wheeler can do to turn this around? We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Sokolov distracts Wheeler with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Sokolov is keen to just control but Wheeler is a slippery customer. Sokolov lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt. Sokolov has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Sokolov wants to lay and pray for a moment but Wheeler keeps working. Wheeler has hold of Sokolov's hands but Sokolov slips his arm to the side and lands an elbow. Nice strikes from Sokolov there. The referee calls for the fighters to work.

 That's two minutes gone in the round. Sokolov is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound. Sokolov prevents Wheeler from improving his position. Sokolov landing with strikes to the body and head, softening up his opponent. Sokolov lands strikes from half guard. Sokolov seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Sokolov wants to pass to mount but Wheeler is defending the position.

Wheeler slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. Sokolov sitting in guard, not really doing much. Sokolov keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Wheeler's head. Sokolov wants to control from the top but Wheeler keeps moving. Sergei Sokolov overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Wheeler working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Sokolov doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Sokolov manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Wheeler has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Sokolov is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Wheeler. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Sokolov scores with a couple of short elbows. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

 That's two minutes gone in the round. Sokolov is nestled in close to Wheeler, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Sokolov moves nicely into side control. Sokolov landing strikes. Sokolov passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Wheeler! Wheeler in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head. Sokolov controlling the pace for now. Wheeler has found himself in a tricky position here. He's been working his transitions in training so let's see if he can work his way out of it. Wheeler tries to hold on but Sokolov pushes him away. Sokolov looking to control and managing it successfully. Sokolov putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound!  That's four minutes gone in the round. Sokolov seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Wheeler for as long as he can get away with. Sokolov has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. Wheeler is in all sorts of trouble here.
