PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Alan West (ranked 3172 p4p, 21282 weight class) and Diego Hageman (ranked 300 p4p, 452 weight class). Diego Hageman looks lathargic as he enters the arena. Wake up son, you're about to have a fight!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 17 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Alan West!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 36 - 40 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Diego Hageman!
The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Robert Douchet and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

West closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Hageman did well to prevent West getting side control.
Hageman wants to control but West is keeping busy and won't allow it.
West content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
West will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
West's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Hageman keeping control of the position.

West is taking a breather. Hageman says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Hageman is concentrating on defense, preventing West from advancing position.
West slows the pace down in half guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

West throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Hageman was covering up waiting for the punch and West finishes the takedown easily into guard.
West's corner is telling him to maintain position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Hageman is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
West looking to pass the guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

West shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Hageman manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
West stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hageman swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Hageman looking to hit a scissor sweep but West is one step ahead there.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Hageman is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
West controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


West dives in and scores a takedown into Hageman's guard.
Hageman is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
West has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Hageman not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Hageman is breathing heavily.

West is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

West tries to free his leg and advance position but Hageman is retaining full guard.
West is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
West looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.

West closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hageman prevents West from improving position.
Hageman trying to remain calm as West controls from the top position.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

West shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Hageman napping and manages to drive through into side control!
West in side control, just content to control the action for now.
West really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
West has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

That's time! West's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

West seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Hageman for as long as he can get away with.
Hageman is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

West slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

West is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Hageman's shoulder. That is not cool.
Diego Hageman has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Alan West is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
West is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Hageman can do to turn this around?
Hageman is trying to escape the position but West is controlling the position.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

West closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Hageman tries to kick West off in order to stand up. West Avoids the leg push though and dives into side control.
Alan West overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
West is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.

Well West has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
