PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Clifford Val Salvacion (ranked 23100 p4p, 23357 weight class) and Yawa Kiang (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 35 - 87 - 6, fighting out of Las Vegas, Clifford Val Salvacion! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 43 - 80 - 3, fighting out of Las Vegas, Yawa Kiang! The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Robert Twigg and Cecil Peabody.
 The bell rings for round one and we are underway! We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight. Kiang fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Salvacion throws a counter high kick but Kiang was just alert enough to avoid it.
Kiang throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Salvacion tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Kiang is in Salvacion's guard. Salvacion controlling the position. Kiang controlling from the top position. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Kiang won't allow Salvacion to sweep him here.
 That's one minute gone in the round.

Kiang stays in close to Salvacion's body and controls the position. The referee is pacing around the two fighters, thinking about a standup.
 The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
 That's two minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Salvacion shoots in but Kiang avoids the takedown attempt easily. Salvacion stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Salvacion wants it to stay on the feet.
Kiang scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Salvacion struggling a bit here.
 That's three minutes gone in the round. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Kiang trying to control the position but Salvacion is working away. A bit of a lull in the action. I'm sure it will pick up again soon... even if the ref has to physically pick them up and put them back on their feet. Salvacion holds on to Kiang's head and controls the position momentarily.
 That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Salvacion has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. Kiang remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.
 The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Kiang shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Salvacion napping and manages to drive through into side control! And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Yawa Kiang dominated that round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Salvacion shoots in but Kiang avoids the takedown attempt easily. Kiang only half commits to the counter leg kick.
Kiang shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Kiang showed some decent athleticism there. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Salvacion controlling the position well.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Salvacion trying to control here.
Kiang looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. Salvacion is looking to control Kiang's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Salvacion avoid being mounted?
 That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Kiang is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Salvacion sees it coming and defends easily. Salvacion trying to control here.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet. Salvacion keeping control of the position.
 The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. Salvacion shoots in looking for a takedown but Kiang manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Salvacion's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. Kiang let fly with a counter punch to the body but it didn't land.
 That's three minutes gone in the round.
Salvacion shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Kiang's guard. Kiang pulls Salvacion in to control the position. Salvacion slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Kiang lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.
Kiang is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
 That's four minutes gone in the round. Salvacion is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Kiang wants to control from the top but Salvacion keeps moving. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Kiang slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Yawa Kiang showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!
Horrible takedown attempt by Salvacion or perhaps it was just good defense by Kiang, which made it look bad. A nice side step and Kiang releases a counter shot to the body, but it doesn't find it's home. Kiang fails miserably with a takedown attempt. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Nice sprawl there from Salvacion as Kiang shoots in. Salvacion appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
 That's one minute gone in the round.
Salvacion throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Kiang was covering up waiting for the punch and Salvacion finishes the takedown easily into guard. Salvacion engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Salvacion's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
 That's two minutes gone in the round. Salvacion seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Kiang for as long as he can get away with. Salvacion preventing the sweep.
 That's three minutes gone in the round. Salvacion is stalling in the full guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
 The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. Kiang will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Clifford Val Salvacion has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Yawa Kiang.
 That's four minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Kiang misses with a takedown attempt - Salvacion sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. And Salvacion counters with a quick kick to the body but Kiang blocks it. Salvacion shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Kiang defends it nicely. Kiang counters with a body kick.
And that's the end of the fight! Clifford Val Salvacion showed his dominance in that final round. I think Kiang has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
