PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Akira Sato (ranked 5423 p4p, 3431 weight class) and Sid Pommier (ranked 493 p4p, 397 weight class). Pommier has chosen Ayla as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Akira Sato!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Sid Pommier!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Ron Honeybunn and Skip Squint.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sato uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Pommier.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Pommier has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
A punch lands to the side of Pommier 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Sato ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Pommier moves away.
Sato checks a low kick. Bone on bone - not my idea of a good time.
Sato appears to be looking for a counter punch to the body.
Sato blocks a head kick by Pommier.
Sato is looking for a counter combo.
Pommier defending well as Sato loads up on a big left hand.
Sato swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Pommier counters with a series of strikes. Sato will be more careful next time no doubt.

Sato instigates a clinch.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Pommier breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Pommier moves into range and clinches up with Sato.
Sato lands a right hand.
A short body shot lands from Sato as the two fighters clinch.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Sato tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked.
Sato is pressed up against the cage. Pommier has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Sato down to the mat. Sato avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Sato throws a hook but Pommier blocks it.
Sato buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
A slow jab from Sato misses its intended target.

Pommier moves into the clinch successfully.
Sato keeps control of Pommier as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Pommier is trying to break the clinch but Sato is controlling him.

Pommier breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Sato misses with a wild body shot.
Sato tries to clinch up but Pommier circles away and keeps his distance.
Pommier was about to counter that last move with a leg kick but changes his mind.
Pommier misses with an uppercut
and Sato counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Sato definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Sato blocks a head kick by Pommier.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
A right handed body shot lands from Sato.
Sato misses with a hook to the ribs.
Pommier's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!
Pommier blocks a body shot from Sato.
Sato misses with the head strike.
Pommier can't break the clinch.

Pommier manages to break the clinch.
Pommier looks for the body kick but Sato saw that one coming.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Sato takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Sato missing with a left hand there. Pommier was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Pommier misses with a head kick.
Sato throws a hook but Pommier avoids it easily.
Sato keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.

and Sato counters with a stiff right hand.

It looks like Sid Pommier has been cut.

Sato closes the distance and pushes Pommier back into the cage.

Pommier's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Pommier throws a head kick that misses.
Sid Pommier seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Pommier gets a clinch.
A shot in the inside from Sato.
Sato prevents a body shot from Pommier.
Sato blocking some punches.

Pommier lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Sato is trying to stand up here but Pommier is controlling him well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Pommier stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Pommier instigates a clinch.
Sato lands with a right to the head.
Sato has a couple of punches blocked by Pommier.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Pommier.
Pommier tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Akira Sato will probably get the nod.
The cut man is working on Sid Pommier's cut.
That's time! Sato's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.

Sato throws an overhand right that lands on Pommier's shoulder, as Pommier tries to avoid the shot.
Sato scores with a sloppy right hand. Pommier should have avoided that one.

Pommier tries to score with a low kick but Sato moves his leg out of the way.

Pommier throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Sato sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Pommier throws a sloppy head kick and Sato moves out of range easily.
A little feinted left hand from Sato on the counter but he doesn't commit to it.

Sato misses the shot to the body.

Sato is looking to counter with a shot to the body.

That kick from Pommier tenderised Sato's leg. Sato is trying to keep his angry face on.
Sato lands a body shot.
Pommier tried to score with a low kick but Sato checks it.
It looked like Sato was trying to counter with a body shot coming off that last attack from Pommier.
Pommier takes one on the chin but seems OK.

Pommier closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Sato lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.
Sato scores with a nice hook to the head.
Sato has Pommier pressed against the cage, preventing Pommier from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Sato can't find room to land a body shot as Pommier controls the action.

Pommier using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Sato has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.

That has opened up Sid Pommier's cut even more.
Sato lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Pommier at a distance.
Sato moves in looking to clinch but Pommier pushes him off.
Sato throws a jab when Pommier was well out of range.
Pommier tries a head kick but it misses.

Pommier has managed to clinch.
Sato lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Pommier.
Pommier tries to land knees in the clinch but Sato avoids the damage to the body.

Sato scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.

Sato has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Pommier.

Sato cracks Pommier with a big right hand that sends him to the floor! Pommier looks wobbly but he's sprung back up to his feet straight away… can Sato finish him?
Sato takes a swing at Pommier's ribcage but misses.
Pommier circles away from the clinch attempt.

Sato clinches with his opponent.
Pommier looking to throw knees to the head but Sato is blocking nicely.

Sato throws a big uppercut that drops Pommier! More strikes from Sato and the referee jumps in to stop the fight! Pommier lies dazed against the cage as Sato celebrates with his cornermen!
