PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Rogerio Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Juninho Palaver (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Juninho Palaver is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rogerio Gracie!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Juninho Palaver!
The judges for this bout are Alexandre Firmino, Thiago Cunha and Edson Gomes.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Palaver has a takedown stuffed.
Gracie stuffs the takedown.
Palaver fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Rogerio Gracie has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Juninho Palaver.
Palaver tries for a takedown but Gracie sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Horrible takedown by Palaver or perhaps it was just good defense by Gracie which made him look bad.

Gracie shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Palaver's guard.

Gracie is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Gracie seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Palaver for as long as he can get away with.

Palaver has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Gracie is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Palaver.

Gracie tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Gracie is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Palaver will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

Gracie wants to pass the guard but Palaver is defending well.
Gracie has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.
Gracie wants to control the pace but Palaver is squirming around nicely.

Palaver working to try and regain half guard.
Gracie looking to control and managing it successfully.

Palaver tries to get to full guard but Gracie has control of the leg.
Gracie working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Well, if Gracie is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Palaver wants to get back to full guard but Gracie has passed into side control.
Gracie controlling the position easily from mount.
Palaver is looking to improve his position but Gracie isn't that keen on the idea.
Gracie tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Palaver is working to get back to half guard.
Gracie controlling from the full mount.
Gracie's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Rogerio Gracie just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.
Palaver misses with a takedown attempt

and Gracie counters with a shoot takedown. Palaver fights it but they end up in guard.

Palaver working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Gracie has passed into half guard!

Palaver is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Gracie pulls his head out easily.
Gracie works his way into side control.
Palaver tries to bench press Gracie off him but Gracie keeps the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Rogerio Gracie dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Palaver shoots and misses

and Gracie counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Gracie is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Gracie has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Palaver tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Gracie wants to control from the top but Palaver keeps moving.

Palaver looking for a guillotine here but Gracie defends easily.

Gracie is pushing down on Palaver's leg trying to pass to half guard. Palaver is fighting to maintain full guard but Gracie has managed to sneak the leg through.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Gracie works his foot free and advances to mount.
Rogerio Gracie overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Gracie prevents Palaver from getting the reversal.
Gracie can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Palaver is looking to escape.
Palaver is wriggling around trying to escape.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Gracie controlling his opponent.
Gracie lands a big shot there that rocks Palaver but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

Gracie looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Palaver sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.

Gracie is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Palaver has managed to free his arm - good work.
Gracie is controlling the pace.

Palaver is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Gracie pulls his head out easily.

Gracie is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! Palaver is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!
