PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Paavo Pesu (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matti Munakas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pesu has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. Matti Munakas will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Paavo Pesu!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Matti Munakas!
The judges for this bout are Roosa Järviläinen, Tarja Halkonen and Matti Vanhoillinen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Pesu.
Pesu is breathing heavily.
Munakas moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
Pesu tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Munakas swivels and escapes.
A right-left combo lands from Munakas.
Pesu circles away from the clinch attempt.
Munakas lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt.

Munakas clinches up with Pesu and pushes him back against the cage.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Munakas breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Munakas tries to close the distance and clinch but Pesu swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Munakas bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Munakas is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Pesu knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

and Pesu takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.

Munakas throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Pesu stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.

Munakas closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Munakas lands in his opponent's guard.

Munakas really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Pesu. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Pesu is trying to hold Munakas in close to prevent damage but Munakas has managed to pass into half guard.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Munakas clinches up with Pesu and pushes him back against the cage.
A right hook to the body lands for Munakas.
Munakas has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Matti Munakas showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Pesu had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Munakas is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Pesu Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Munakas's back instead.

Pesu is looking to control Munakas but Munakas is wriggling around and keeping busy.
Munakas has the hand control, trying to stop the rear naked choke.
Munakas staying busy and making it hard for Pesu to control.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Munakas turns into Pesu and is now in his guard.
Munakas is looking to stand up but Pesu won't let him.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Munakas thuds his shin into the meat of Pesu's side.
Munakas connects with a single shot there.
Munakas lands three nice shots there - that looked like it hurt!

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Pesu gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Munakas counters with a one-two to the body.

And that's the end of the fight!
Matti Munakas comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Munakas has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
