PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Franklin Cage (ranked 3023 p4p, 25123 weight class) and Xi Daerji (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Franklin Cage!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 44 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Xi Daerji!
The judges for this bout are Franklyn Lucas, Alyssa Summers and Bruno Lombardi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Daerji has closed the distance and engaged Cage in a clinch.
Daerji prevents a body shot from Cage.
Cage is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.
Cage leaning his opponent against the cage.

Daerji pulls guard.
Daerji trying to keep a closed guard but Cage is proving a slippery customer.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Cage is looking to work some ground and pound but Daerji has wrist control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Cage trying to control but Daerji is working from the bottom.
Cage is pushing down on Daerji's leg trying to pass to half guard. Daerji is fighting to maintain full guard but Cage has managed to sneak the leg through.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Cage seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Daerji tries to roll over but Cage keeps him under control.

Cage is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Cage is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Cage wants to control but Daerji is keeping him busy.

Cage is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Daerji tries to kick Cage off but Cage keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Cage wants to pass to mount but Daerji is defending the position.
Daerji is doing well to control the position and prevent Cage from advancing to side control.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Daerji is looking to improve his position.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Cage keeps the fight on the outside.
Cage tries for a takedown but Daerji circles away easily
and Daerji counters with a left and a right that stings Cage.
The fight stays on the outside here - Daerji looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
As Daerji looks to move away, Cage throws a big counter combo but Daerji just gets out of the way.
Daerji displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Cage.

Daerji stuffs the takedown.

Daerji moves into range and clinches up with Cage.
Daerji fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Cage pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Daerji lands with a nice body punch.
Cage darts in looking for a takedown but Daerji gets double underhooks and turns Cage into the cage.
Daerji dictating the pace here, as the fighters clinch against the cage.

Cage breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Daerji tries a low kick but Cage avoids it.
Daerji cracks Cage with a right hand to the side of the head.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Cage shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Cage showed some decent athleticism there.
Cage slips a nice elbow through Daerji's hands, connecting with Daerji's forehead.

Cage is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Daerji is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Cage wants to stand up but Daerji has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Cage wants to lay and pray for a moment but Daerji keeps working.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

Cage is looking for a kimura but Daerji is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Cage to get the leverage.

Cage tries to pass the half guard into mount. Daerji knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Daerji is staying active underneath Cage, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Cage wants to clinch
and Daerji counters with a three punch combo that has Cage backing up. Cage nods at Daerji to acknowledge the strikes.

Cage closes the distance and clinches.
A head punch blocked on the inside by Daerji.
Daerji stays in close to his opponent and throws a right hand to the body.
Daerji looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.

Cage's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Cage.
No luck for Cage with that takedown attempt.
Daerji is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Cage with a body shot.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Franklin Cage. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Daerji shoots in and drives through. Cage sprawls well.
Cage changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Daerji tries to avoid it but Cage manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Daerji to the ground. Daerji escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Cage shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Daerji but Daerji pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Cage pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Daerji back to the cage. Cage follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Daerji is trying to force a seperation but Cage has the dominant position.

Cage breaks the clinch.

Daerji has taken the fight to the clinch.
Cage is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Daerji pulls him back up using the underhooks.

Good anti-grappling being displayed by Daerji as Cage tries to tie him up.
Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Daerji.
Cage drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Daerji gets the underhooks and prevents it.

Daerji manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Daerji has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Cage off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Daerji's jab looks to have found its range, popping Cage under the eye.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Xi Daerji showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! And we move into the final round!

Daerji punishes Cage's body with a nice straight punch.
Daerji shoots in but Cage avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Cage lands with a good body shot.
Daerji stuffs the takedown attempt from Cage. Cage gets slowly back to his feet.

Daerji feints and as Cage raises his hands in defense, Daerji changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Cage shoots in looking for a takedown. Daerji tries to sprawl out of it but Cage keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Daerji manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Daerji tries to score a power double leg takedown but Cage sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Daerji somewhat.

Cage throws a sloppy head kick and Daerji moves out of range easily.

Daerji wants the takedown. Cage is fighting it off but Daerji persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Cage's guard against the cage.

Cage swings for the body but Daerji moves out of range.
Daerji connects with a looping right hand.
Daerji scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.

Cage is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Franklin Cage has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Xi Daerji is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Daerji rushes Cage and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Well Daerji has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
