PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Gadzhi Magomedov (ranked 5000 p4p, 4933 weight class) and Sami Sakkinen (ranked 437 p4p, 433 weight class). Sami Sakkinen will no doubt be looking to use his reach advantage to good effect.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Gadzhi Magomedov!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Sami Sakkinen!
The judges for this bout are Paulsen Ambrosius, Daniel Blasius and Nard Betker.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Magomedov moves forwards but Sakkinen connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Sakkinen scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Magomedov takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Magomedov blocks a jab.
Magomedov shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Sakkinen as he avoids it easily.
Magomedov looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Magomedov looks to score with a jab to the body but Sakkinen is just out of range.

Sakkinen shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Sakkinen was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!

Sakkinen is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Magomedov knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Sakkinen tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Sakkinen has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Sakkinen is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Magomedov is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Magomedov can't do much from the bottom here.
Magomedov is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.

Sakkinen is working for a submission of some sort.

Magomedov seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Sakkinen pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Magomedov is keeping the position for now.
Sakkinen really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Magomedov. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

Magomedov fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Sakkinen sprawls well initially but Magomedov persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

Sakkinen has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at The Tank Factory. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one.
Sakkinen wants to improve his position but Magomedov is controlling well.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Magomedov wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Sakkinen, who protects the arm well.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Sakkinen holds on tight, trying to prevent any damage.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Sami Sakkinen dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

Magomedov throws a series of strikes that have Sakkinen backpedaling.
Magomedov comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.

Sakkinen throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Magomedov was covering up waiting for the punch and Sakkinen finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Magomedov wants to sweep but no luck.

Magomedov looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Magomedov working for a triangle but Sakkinen defends it easily.

Magomedov has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Sakkinen can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Magomedov is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.

Sakkinen drops back, looking for a kneebar! Magomedov looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Magomedov looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Magomedov!

Sakkinen is not content to let Magomedov control the position.
Sakkinen can't do much from the bottom here.
Magomedov wants to lay and pray for a moment but Sakkinen keeps working.

Magomedov tries for a kimura but Sakkinen is defending well.
A control attempt from Sakkinen but he's now mounted!
Magomedov avoids the attempt from Sakkinen to control.
Magomedov tries to control but Sakkinen wriggling away.
Sakkinen keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Magomedov working for a submission but Sakkinen is keeping him at bay.

Sakkinen tries to hold on but Magomedov pushes him away.
Magomedov with some aggressive grappling here, looking for the finish.
Sakkinen wants to control but Magomedov is having none of it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Magomedov fails to move to back control.
Sakkinen is just holding on here. Magomedov manages to take his back.

Magomedov has his opponent's back and is working for the choke.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Magomedov has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Sakkinen has freed his hand and lives to survive another� well, another couple of seconds at least!

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! And we move into the final round!

Magomedov is trying hard to land a takedown here. Sakkinen sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Sakkinen connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Magomedov's hands.
Magomedov lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Sakkinen at a distance.
Good standup being displayed there by Sakkinen as he connects with a hook.
Magomedov fails with the takedown.
Magomedov takes one on the button.

Sakkinen drops Magomedov with a hook right on the temple. He thinks about going to the ground but Magomedov looks back up at him and smiles so Sakkinen waves him back to his feet - he obviously thinks he can knock him out after that shot landed.

Magomedov is rocked!
Gadzhi Magomedov is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Sakkinen closes the distance looking for a takedown. Magomedov stuffs it but Sakkinen still has hold of him. Sakkinen picks Magomedov up in a fireman's lift! The crowd roars in approval. Sakkinen slams Magomedov to the floor and that's really hurt Magomedov - he doesn't know where he is! Sakkinen throws a couple of strikes and the referee steps in to save him! This one is in the books!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:36 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Sami Sakkinen!
