PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Zoltan Szobo (ranked 3098 p4p, 4350 weight class) and Oliver Meija (ranked 343 p4p, 457 weight class). Both these guys have solid standup skills and neither is particularly fantastic on the ground, so let's hope for a nice standup war!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Zoltan Szobo!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Oliver Meija!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Timothy Bukovac and Jack Bonds.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Meija shoots in but Szobo avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Szobo looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!
Meija pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Szobo dives in and grabs Meija's left leg, looking for a takedown. Meija pushes down on Szobo's head and hops out.
Meija falls off balance throwing a combination
and Szobo counters with a three punch combo that has Meija backing up. Meija nods at Szobo to acknowledge the strikes.
Szobo really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Szobo.
Nice sprawl there from Szobo as Meija shoots in.
Szobo appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Meija misses with a double jab.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Szobo displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Meija.

Szobo appears to be looking for a counter takedown.

Meija shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Szobo but Szobo pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Meija tries to clinch up but Szobo circles away and keeps his distance.

Meija throws a half hearted mid kick.

Szobo displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Meija.

Meija shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Szobo as he jumps to the side.
Szobo circles away from the clinch attempt.
Szobo stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Szobo wants it to stay on the feet.
Meija lands a jab, followed by a cross and another cross, as Szobo backs up against the cage.
Meija swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Szobo changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Meija tries to avoid it but Szobo manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Meija to the ground. Meija escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Meija will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Szobo drops down looking for a counter takedown but Meija sprawls and moves away.
Szobo takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Meija shoots for a double leg takedown but Szobo sprawls well. He's pushed Meija's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Meija tries to clinch but Szobo is having none of it.
Meija should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Meija shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Szobo pinned against the cage. Szobo gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Szobo tries to counter with a takedown but Meija is quick to defend against it.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Szobo.
Szobo looks for a takedown but Meija sprawls well.
Meija tries to clinch but Szobo moves out of range.

Szobo half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Szobo slaps away a takedown attempt from Meija, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Meija tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Szobo defends well and Meija ends up having to push Szobo into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Meija wants to control but Szobo postures up.
Szobo is looking to take a break and control but Meija is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Meija is trying to improve his position.

Szobo looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Szobo tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Szobo has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Meija is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Szobo thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Szobo is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Meija knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Meija is looking for a sweep.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Szobo tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Szobo wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Meija, who protects the arm well.
Meija is looking for a sweep.
Szobo wants to lay and pray for a moment but Meija keeps working.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Meija wants to control but Szobo postures up.
Meija avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Szobo.
Meija wants to get back to his feet.

The fight stays on the outside here - Szobo looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

and Meija counters with a three punch combo that has Szobo backing up. Szobo nods at Meija to acknowledge the strikes.
Left hook, right uppercut from Meija.

Szobo is rocked!
Meija connects with a jab, followed by a picture perfect straight right that sends Szobo to the canvas, out cold! What a finish by Meija!
