PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Ikapoti Puapua (ranked 5144 p4p, 1950 weight class) and Mackin Hooez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mackin Hooez is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Ikapoti Puapua!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Mackin Hooez!
The judges for this bout are Ron Honeybunn, Skip Squint and Bruno Hogan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nice uppercut there from Hooez.
Puapua is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Puapua tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Hooez paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Hooez's corner calls for a 1-2. Hooez obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Puapua tries to close the distance and clinch up but Hooez swats him away and circles back towards the center.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Hooez has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.

Hooez drops Puapua with a nice combination! Hooez dives into Puapua's guard, looking to finish!

Puapua is rocked!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Hooez's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Oh Puapua is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!

Hooez drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Puapua manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Hooez has Puapua in his guard.

Puapua seems to have got his legs back now.

Hooez looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Puapua passes into side control.
Hooez manages to get back to half guard.
Puapua knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Hooez on the ground.

Hooez tries to roll over but Puapua keeps him under control.

Hooez is looking for a triangle but Puapua pushes his legs off easily.
Hooez pulls Puapua in close to prevent any damage.

Hooez looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.

Hooez looking for subs off his back but Puapua has passed one foot through into half guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Hooez is controlling Puapua's position as best he can from this difficult position.
Hooez's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Hooez is trying to get back to full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Puapua tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Hooez paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Puapua could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Puapua closes the distance but Hooez moves to the side
and Hooez counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
Hooez is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Puapua is looking to clinch.

Hooez drives through and clinches with Puapua against the cage.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Hooez's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.

Hooez has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Puapua is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.
The referee calls for Hooez to work.

Puapua tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Hooez manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Hooez fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Puapua sprawls well initially but Hooez persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Puapua is defending against the submission attempts here by Hooez.

Hooez looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Hooez is continuing to stall.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Mackin Hooez showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Hooez uses his free foot to push down on Puapua's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Puapua.

Hooez looking to control and managing it successfully.
Let's hope that Hooez has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
The adventures of Hooez the control monster continue. Boring.
More stalling from Hooez.

Hooez looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Hooez sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.

Hooez goes for an armbar but Puapua turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Puapua.

Hooez not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Puapua might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Hooez is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Puapua defends well.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hooez has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

Hooez escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Puapua gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Hooez had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Puapua defends it easily.
Puapua trying to control but Hooez is working from the bottom.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Hooez has control of Puapua's left arm, preventing Puapua from doing any damage.
Ikapoti Puapua has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

And that's the end of the fight!
Mackin Hooez comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Hooez has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
