Vernon feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.  That's two minutes gone in the round. Vernon is pushing down on Rules's leg trying to pass to half guard. Rules is fighting to maintain full guard but Vernon has managed to sneak the leg through.
Vernon seems to be working for a kimura but Rules defends the submission attempt. Rules trying to hold on to Vernon's head to control him but Vernon postures up.

 That's three minutes gone in the round. Vernon takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Vernon wants to pass the guard but Rules is defending well. Rules tries to get to full guard but Vernon has control of the leg. Vernon trying to pass the guard but Rules defending well.

 That's five minutes gone in the round. Rules rolls, trying to escape but Vernon keeps control of the position.
Rules prevents Vernon from getting a body triangle. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.
 That's six minutes gone in the round. Rules tries to roll but Vernon sticks to his back.
 That's seven minutes gone in the round. Vernon really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for Rules. Vernon has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. Rules manages to reverse the position and now he's in Vernon's guard. Nice work there by Rules.

 That's eight minutes gone in the round. Rules trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Rules sitting in guard, not really doing much. Rules tries to free his leg and advance position but Vernon is retaining full guard. Vernon pulls Rules in close to prevent any damage.

 That's ten minutes gone in the round. Vernon pulls Rules in close to his closed guard and prevents Rules from doing any damage or advancing position. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Vernon working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Rules doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Rules manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Rules stopping the sweep attempt from Vernon.
 That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Vernon can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Rules controls the pace. Vernon keeping moving, preventing Rules from controlling successfully. Vernon wants to control the position but Rules says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard. Vernon has his hands clasped together around Rules's back. He's all about the action. Vernon is trying to maintain the position but Rules is very close to passing his half guard.
 That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Rules content to sit in half guard and control for a moment. Let's hope that Rules has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. Vernon gets full guard. Rules looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
 That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Vernon wants to control the position but Rules says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard. Still in half guard, Rules seems content to control. Rules prevents Vernon from improving his position. Rules is looking to advance position but Vernon won't allow it.
 That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Rules takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Vernon is looking for a sweep. Rules is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Rules controlling the action here. Vernon tries to get to full guard but Rules has control of the leg. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!!
